Fleet Services Mechanic

The Fleet Services department is seeking a skilled Fleet Services Mechanic to complete mechanical repair and maintenance work on large and small engines and related equipment. Open until filled. The assigned work hours for this position are 1:00pm to 9:30pm, Monday through Friday.
All new hires will start out at the following salary based on current, valid ASE Certifications: Grade 20: 0-3 ASE Certifications $33.66/hr Grade 21: 4-13 ASE Certifications $35.25/hr Grade 22: 14 ASE Certifications $36.93/hr ASE Certification documentation must be submitted to the City of Des Moines Human Resources Department by the application deadline to receive credit. Acceptable Experience and Training

Graduation from High School or equivalent; and
Three years of professional experience in Automotive, Truck, or Heavy equipment maintenance and repair; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work. (A two-year degree in Automotive, or Diesel repair and maintenance satisfies the equivalent experience requirement.)
Required Special Qualifications

Possession of a valid Class B CDL allowing the operation of airbrakes upon appointment or the ability to obtain within 6 months. If possess an out-of-state Driver's License, submittal of certified driving records is required. All records should be submitted to the City of Des Moines Human Resources Department by the application deadline date.
Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

Diagnoses, maintains and repairs all motorized and non-motorized equipment and components.
Diagnoses, dismantles, inspects, overhauls (minor or major) mechanical or hydraulic systems on equipment such as booms, derricks, diggers, bucket truck and cranes.
Makes repairs to pumps, cylinders, valves, pulleys, levers and control lines, hoses, cables, drive assemblies and hydraulic winches.
Maintains and repairs motorized and non-motorized special equipment such as small engines, portable and stationary generators, hydraulic, pneumatic and electric tools, winches and gear boxes and add-on components such as spotlight and rotary lights.
Drives vehicles and equipment to and from designated locations as necessary in performance of regular duties including maintenance service calls, operates associated devices.
Tests equipment on vehicles after repairs are completed before releasing back to the vehicle/equipment pool.
Picks up and delivers vehicles, equipment, parts and supplies associated with garage work.
Diagnoses and repairs vehicles and equipment in the field.
Schedules and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment and related components.
Prioritizes repairs to be completed and ensures work is completed in a timely manner.
Performs minor welding and fabrication work.
Maintains records of labor, parts and vehicle data as prescribed.
Performs housekeeping tasks.
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.
Responds to customer questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
