Job Title

Water System Treatment Plant Operator
Description

Under general supervision, operates the water system treatment plant on an assigned shift. Monitors the water condition for health and safety; monitors the plant system and equipment. Collects water samples at various locations around the plant to assure that the chemical levels are as they should be. Conducts routine testing of water for compliance with all state and federal regulatory guidelines. Records data based on information from tests and from computer terminals. Answers telephone calls for emergencies and line breaks; dispatches personnel and equipment on sewer back ups and water line leaks. Logs chemical feed numbers for daily operations. Performs emergency repairs of broken equipment, emergency shut-downs of malfunctioning equipment, modifies treatment to keep plant optimized and running, runs specialized testing to restore process equilibrium during plant upsets. Calls repair crews when needed. Performs general plant maintenance and clean up. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED; and, One to two years of progressively responsible related experience; or, any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid State Driver's License. Must be able to obtain Class D State Water Operators License within twelve (12) months, and be able to obtain a Class C within eighteen (18) months of appointment. Must progressively work toward obtaining a Class B license.

Knowledge of:

Operation, maintenance and routine repair of large pumps, motors, valves, and other units of mechanical and hydraulic equipment in a water plant. Materials, methods, and equipment utilized in the routine maintenance and repair of equipment in a water plant. Recordkeeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques. All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job. Applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations.

Skill in:

Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines. Basic mechanics. Using mathematics. Operating all equipment required in the performance of the essential functions of the position. Communicating clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Reading and interpreting blue prints, operating manuals, and schematics.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, speak and hear, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions:

While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, and work in high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud. Working time may require irregular hours, shift times, and/or on-call status.
