Job Purpose And Reporting Structure: Under the direction of the Machine Shop Supervisor, the machinist sets up and operates machine tools to produce a target that matches the production orders stating customer's specifications including tolerances and density. Plans and executes assignments using a wide variety of machines such as: lathes, milling machine, drill press and bench grinder to manufacture PVD materials. May operate computer controlled machine (CNC) and uses precision measuring instruments to check accuracy of work.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following. Other Duties May Be Assigned.
Set up and operate machine tools such as engine lathe, drill press, milling machine, bench grinder and diamond tool grinder.
Read and interpret drawings, blueprints and job instructions to determine procedures and operational sequence and measuring devices such as: micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, verniers, scales and similar tools.
Check measuring devices on a rotational basis using standards established by the Quality Assurance department.
Prepare and maintain necessary production records and reports.
Report equipment malfunctions and assists with routine maintenance and repairs.
Follow all clean-up and housekeeping procedures.
Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations.
Marginal Duties:
Operate forklift truck to load, unload and move materials. (On the job training available and required)
Protective Clothing Required: Requires the use of safety glasses, safety shoes, a respirator, hearing protection and protective clothing such as a uniform or lab coat. Other, more specialized protective gear may be required occasionally.

Education and/or Experience: High school, shop experience or equivalent. Machine shop training in mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties and layout procedures.
Other Skills and Abilities: Requires the ability to set up and operate engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses and other various machine tools.
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions. Ability to write standard documentation. Ability to communicate with other employees to share information and solve problems.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; reach above shoulders; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 45 lbs. and occasionally team lift/ move up to 90 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is regularly exposed to low concentrations of fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally works with reactive material and may be exposed to low-level radioactive materials. All such exposures are customarily within limits established by federal and state regulatory bodies. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Hourly range: $28 to $34.50. Several factors contribute to actual salary, including experience in a similar role or performing comparable job responsibilities, skills, training, and other qualifications. Some roles may be eligible for participation in performance-based bonus programs.
