Transit Bus Operator

Definition & Essential Functions
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Transit System Administrator, safely operates a bus on assigned route schedule (fixed and paratransit curb-to-curb service); collects and accounts for fares; performs daily bus safety inspection (pre and post-trip); greets and provides direction and other information to customers; assists passengers on and off the bus; and performs other related work as required. May work various hours and days of the week including Saturdays, holidays, and split shifts.
Tasks
Operates a variety of transit buses in a manner that ensures passenger comfort and safety.
Operates wheelchair ramp and assists disabled passengers in boarding, securing, riding and alighting in a safe manner.
Adheres to safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure the well being of Vista Transit customers and employees.
Maintains schedule adherence for pull-out time and en-route service.
Performs a complete pre and post trip inspection of bus, safety checks of equipment, and informs dispatch when adjustments or repairs are necessary.
Receives and transmits two-way radio messages involving customer transfers, accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or other unauthorized Vista Transit business utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure patron and individual safety.
Reports hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at bus stops, including such hazards as unusual traffic, road conditions, obstructions, construction and criminal activity.
Cleans and maintains transit equipment and buses.
Assists customers on and off transit buses.
Collects fares and checks customer passes or transfers.
Provides schedule, route and fare information to passengers seeking assistance concerning the Vista Transit System and connecting buses; notifies dispatch to obtain additional information as needed.
Responsible for complying with all City and departmental work rules, policies and procedures.
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics
Understanding of: Federal and State Traffic laws and regulations, Arizona Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration (ADOT and FTA) rules, regulations and requirements pertaining to small urban transportation system operations.
Knowledge of: Local community and street system, first aid and emergency procedures, operation of small and large transit buses, safety principles and regulations applicable to bus operations, proper bus maintenance and inspection procedures, customer service practices.
Ability to: Speak, read and write English, operate a two-way radio, communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, operate a passenger bus safely and effectively, collect bus fares, transport and assist passengers on and off the bus, inspect a bus for safe operation and identify and report equipment malfunctions and safety hazards, arrive on-time and work independently with minimal supervision, communicate politely and cooperatively with passengers and members of the public, exercise tact and sound judgment when resolving operational and passenger problems, maintain cooperative working relationships with the public and fellow employees, maintain logs, daily schedules and various records, be friendly, courteous and assist all passengers including passengers with wide ranges of special needs, including physical and developmental disabilities, learn operations, services and activities of a customer service program, learn and drive all Vista Transit routes, perceptual skills to monitor complex driving situation, the judgment to make quick decisions, when necessary, coordination to control an oversize steering wheel, and maneuver a vehicle in crowded areas.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. AZ Driver's license or ability or obtain upon hire. Commercial Driver's License (CDL), minimum of a Class "B", including "P" Passenger endorsement, with medical certification or ability to obtain within three 90 days after the start of employment. Must be able to pass an Arizona department of Corrections background check before start date. Must be able to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation approved physical before start date. Prefer experience driving commercial vehicles and CPR certification. Five (5) year driving history record required. An acceptable driving record shall have no more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years; no more than three (3) moving violations in the most recent 5 year period; and no more than four (4) current driving penalty points. This position is considered safety sensitive and subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations.
