Bus Monitor
Rides the school bus and helps the driver ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities. May drive a district vehicle and/or ride a school bus helping the driver ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.
Primary Purpose:
Rides the school bus and helps the driver ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification Requirements:
High school graduate or GED equivalent preferred
Must be 21 years of age or older
Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License
Safe driving record verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety
Certification as Texas Bus Driver Certification by the Texas Education Agency (requirement satisfied by successful completion of 20 hours Texas Department of Public Safety course)
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check
Knowledge and Skills:
Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
Ability to work well with children with disabilities
Punctual and dependable
Must be able to understand instructions and communicate in basic English
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Must meet alcohol and controlled substance testing requirements set forth by the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1992
Must pass annual medical examination per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Assist students on/off the bus as needed
Escort children across the street to/from curb
Assist with special needs students individually as needed
Secure students in seats, wheelchairs, or other devices used for the safety of the students
Work cooperatively with driver in maintaining safe conditions on the bus
Maintain good rapport with students, parents and guardians
Maintain discipline in-route. Notifies appropriate campus personnel of problem students or unusual happenings
Know bus routes well enough to guide a substitute driver
Help driver keep bus clean
May be required to work with wheelchairs
Work irregular hours as needed
May be required to lift younger students into or out of car seats
Supervise use of seat belts, harnesses, or car seat seats by students
Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary
Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs
Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
Ability to use a personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job

School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher
Wheelchair lifts, ramps, locks, and special needs adaptive equipment.
Mental Demands:
Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands:
Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and/or ramps, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
Occasional: Lifting, moderate, 15-44 pounds
Environmental Factors:
Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
