Job Title: Controls Installer

Job Description

The Controls Installer installs, wires, and troubleshoots electrical components for HVAC controls, lighting, and instrumentation within commercial and government buildings. This role works from blueprints and schematics, bends and installs conduit, collaborates closely with other trades, and follows all relevant safety codes, including the National Electrical Code (NEC). The position requires strong problem-solving and communication skills, as well as the physical ability to perform site work such as climbing, lifting, and working in varied environmental conditions.

Compensation

The base pay rate for this position is $40-43/hr, commiserate with experience and licensure.

This team does scale work in the DC Metro area, with fringe rates ranging from $10-20/hr.

Responsibilities

Install and wire controllers, sensors, wiring, conduit, and lighting systems for building automation and HVAC control applications in various areas of commercial and government buildings.

Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and construction documents to complete installations accurately and efficiently.

Diagnose and resolve electrical issues in complex building automation and HVAC control systems, often under time constraints or with incomplete site information.

Bend, route, and install conduit, wiring, and cable systems in accordance with project specifications and applicable electrical codes.

Collaborate effectively with other trades on-site to coordinate work, resolve conflicts, and maintain project schedules.

Provide clear written and electronic reports on work status, identified deficiencies, and corrective actions taken or recommended.

Maintain high standards of workmanship, ensuring neat, code-compliant installations and reliable system performance.

Uphold excellent customer relations through professional communication and responsive service.

Follow all safety procedures and guidelines, including strict adherence to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and site-specific safety requirements.

Report progress regularly to the designated electrical foreman or project lead and seek clarification when project conditions or documentation are unclear.

Use appropriate tools and test equipment to verify system functionality and ensure proper operation of installed controls and electrical components.

Essential Skills

Hands-on experience installing and wiring electrical components for HVAC controls, lighting, and instrumentation in commercial or institutional settings.

Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings.

Ability to bend, route, and install conduit, wiring, and cabling systems safely and efficiently.

Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving issues in complex building automation and HVAC electrical systems.

Familiarity with building automation or HVAC electrical systems and their associated control components.

Solid understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and its application to commercial electrical installations.

Ability to prioritize tasks and resolve issues independently while meeting project deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with clients, team members, and other trades.

Physical ability to climb, lift up to 60 pounds, bend, and work in varied environments, including heat, cold, and at heights.

Willingness and ability to complete background checks and drug screenings as required for work on government projects.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Previous experience as an electrician or controls installer in construction or retrofit projects.

Experience working on building automation systems, including controls installation and integration.

Mechanical aptitude and comfort working around HVAC and mechanical equipment.

Experience working in commercial and government facilities, including mechanical rooms, plant levels, and rooftops.

Demonstrated ability to produce clear written and electronic documentation of work performed.

Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and professional customer service.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Greenbelt, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $60.00/hr.
