Position Summary

The Comsumer Lender I is a customer-facing retail banking role responsible for supporting consumer banking relationships through deposit account services and non-dwelling consumer lending activities. This position serves as a primary point of contact for assigned customers, guiding them through account opening, consumer loan processing, closing, and ongoing servicing. The Consumer Lender I focuses on developing foundational lending, sales, and relationship management skills while delivering a consultative, client-focused banking experience in compliance with bank policies and regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions:

Retail Banking & Deposit Services

Serve as a primary relationship contact for deposit customers through consultative conversations that identify financial needs and recommend appropriate banking solutions
Open, maintain, and service consumer deposit accounts, ensuring accurate documentation, disclosures, and regulatory compliance
Process routine account maintenance requests and resolve customer inquiries through completion
Identify opportunities for deposit growth, referrals, and relationship deepening
Educate customers on available banking products, services, and digital tools to enhance engagement

Consumer Lending

Serve as relationship contact for non-dwelling consumer loans, identifying borrowing needs and accepting loan applications and supporting documentation
Coordinate the consumer loan process, including communicating credit decisions and preparing compliant loan documentation for closing and booking
Complete collateral and lien perfection activities in accordance with internal controls and timelines
Manage an assigned consumer loan portfolio by monitoring documentation, servicing needs, and loan performance
Support collection and problem loan efforts through customer communication and follow-up

General & Compliance Responsibilities

Deliver a consistent, professional, and client-first customer experience
Maintain awareness of fraud risks, suspicious activity, and operational concerns and escalate as appropriate
Operate within established risk management, compliance, and control expectations
Collaborate with branch staff, lending, and operations partners
Participate in required training, meetings, and professional development activities
Maintain a positive attitude and display courteous, respectful behavior toward customers and coworkers; represent the bank professionally through appearance, punctuality, confidentiality, and adaptability.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business-related field is strongly preferred.
One or more years of recent customer service experience and consumer lending experience is required.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Skills For Success

3 years of experience in banking, loan operations, or administrative support required; commercial lending knowledge preferred.

Working knowledge of commercial loan documentation and terminology.

Experience with core banking and loan documentation systems preferred.

Familiarity with commercial credit underwriting and loan lifecycle processes preferred.

Understanding of collateral types, UCC filings, and insurance requirements preferred.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused, professional, and courteous demeanor.

Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint/OneDrive).

Works with Branch Manager to coordinate the activities of branch personnel by assigning work, answering questions, solving problems, helping with complex transactions and sensitive customer relations issues, explaining policies and procedures, and so forth;
Maintains comprehensive knowledge on bank policies, procedures, including BSA reporting, to ensure clear communication and understanding by all branch staff members;
Participating in required compliance training and insuring compliance with all regulations that apply within the scope of the position. Supervisors have day-to-day oversight responsibility for ensuring compliance with regulatory laws as they relate to functions within their departments;
Responsible for providing front-end centralized residential mortgage, home equity, and home equity line of credit application processing for all customers and prospects.
Responsible for the evaluation, decisioning, and processing of consumer loan requests from application to closing.
Conducts audits along with Branch Manager to ensure branch personnel are properly following bank procedures and policies as expected;
Continually serves as mentor for head teller and teller line staff, utilizing opportunities to coach and cross-train. Communicates performance expectations and provides timely and beneficial feedback to employees aiding in their development. Coordinates with Branch Manager to provide timely and appropriate corrective/disciplinary action when necessary;
Performs other duties on a regular basis to facilitate branch harmony and teamwork; this includes: running a teller drawer, balancing the ATM and cash dispenser, balancing the vault, receiving and shipping currency, serving as back up for handling overdrafts, maintaining ADP timecards, and branch supply orders;
Prepares 14-day letter for overdrafts, sending required documentation to Bookkeeping;
Monitors branch cash level and submits Cash Monitor sheet monthly;
Scheduling and requesting floaters as needed;
Helps to maintain and update loan packet supply available behind the teller line;
Works with Branch Manager to ensure branch staff remains fully trained and up-to-date on security procedures and policies;
Ensures the facility and equipment are properly maintained to safeguard against financial loss to the bank or personal injury to customers or employees;
Performs other duties necessary to meet the goals and objective of this position.
Contacts & Relationships: The individual in this position will work closely with the Branch Manager, branch employees and administrative department personnel for the purpose of accomplishing the tasks above.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Associates (2-yr) degree OR equivalent banking industry experience;
Positive professional leadership/supervisory ability
Demonstrated reasoning and problem-solving aptitude
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office or similar software

Employee will need to see what is going on around the branch for safety reasons, and be able to do close up paperwork and view computer screens.
