Job Summary
The Transformer Technician is responsible for executing specialized field services on power transformers and associated high-voltage equipment across North America. This role focuses on transformer assembly, vacuum oil processing, commissioning support, maintenance, and lifecycle services.
This is a hands-on, travel-based role requiring strong mechanical aptitude, electrical awareness, and the ability to work safely and efficiently in high-demand environments such as substations, industrial facilities, and data center infrastructure.
Technicians represent Axium in the field and are expected to uphold the highest standards of safety, technical execution, and professionalism.
Responsibilities
Transformer Assembly & Field Services
Perform full transformer dress-out including radiators, bushings, conservators, cooling systems, and auxiliary components
Execute mechanical assembly, torquing, alignment, and sealing per OEM specifications
Install wiring, gauges, and control components associated with transformer systems
Support transformer disassembly, relocation, and refurbishment activities
Oil Processing & Vacuum Services
Operate oil processing equipment including vacuum dehydration and filtration systems
Perform vacuum pulls, leak detection, and vacuum hold tests
Execute hot oil circulation, oil filling, and conditioning processes
Maintain oil quality standards including moisture, dielectric strength, and cleanliness
Collect and support analysis of oil samples including DGA and moisture testing
Testing & Commissioning Support
Support electrical testing activities including insulation resistance, power factor, TTR, and winding resistance
Assist in commissioning and energization activities
Monitor transformer performance during startup and troubleshooting phases
Safety & Quality
Follow all safety protocols including lockout/tagout, PPE, and rigging procedures
Participate in hazard assessments, safety meetings, and job planning
Ensure all work aligns with industry standards including OSHA, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NETA practices
Complete accurate field documentation, reports, and checklists
Equipment & Logistics
Maintain oil processing units, pumps, hoses, and field equipment
Assist with mobilization and demobilization of trailers and jobsite equipment
Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on field equipment
Qualifications
Required
2+ years of experience working with power transformers or high-voltage equipment
Strong understanding of transformer components and field service processes
Experience with oil processing xywuqvp systems and vacuum equipment
Ability to read OEM drawings, schematics, and procedures
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively (50–70%)
Preferred
Experience in substation, utility, or industrial environments
Rigging, forklift, or CDL experience
Exposure to electrical testing or commissioning scopes
NETA, OSHA 30, or OEM-specific training
