Distinguishing Features of Work
This is work in the maintenance and replacement of water mains, hydrants, valves, and service lines. Employees perform semiskilled maintenance tasks or assist skilled workers, and safely operate trucks and other powered equipment. The job requires general mechanical ability and is supervised and inspected by a supervisor. Work is outdoors in inclement weather and may include emergency response operations with overnight shifts, weekends, and low-light conditions.
Examples of Work Performed
Assist in construction and repair of water mains, valves, hydrants, service lines, and related facilities.
Assist in installing, operating, repairing, and replacing water distribution system appurtenances.
Perform minor servicing work on equipment such as refueling, lubricating, washing, and making minor adjustments.
Operate a truck and assist in loading and unloading materials such as sand, stone, cement, pipes, brick, gravel, dirt, and other similar items.
Operate heavy equipment with attachments and various types of tools and equipment.
Dig ditches and other excavations.

Requirements of Work
Acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement within 120 days of start date.
Willingness to work under unpleasant conditions with safety equipment and procedures.
Maneuver onto vehicular equipment and perform daily fluid/filter checks.
Knowledge and ability to use basic tools and equipment for water utility operations.
Tolerate operating and riding heavy equipment for long periods of time.
Shovel snow, sand, gravel, or asphalt to/from dump truck bed.
Tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions.
Use a 20-pound sledgehammer safely against brick, concrete, or similar substances.
Lift and carry items weighing up to 90 pounds alone or up to 150 pounds with assistance.
Operate a power saw and concrete saw safely and effectively.
Operate a jackhammer safely and effectively, meeting a minimum height requirement of 55 feet.
Continuously perform tasks that require pushing, pulling, climbing, bending, twisting, reaching, standing, and walking up to half a mile per shift.
Enter and exit excavations as narrow as 24 inches in diameter.
Read and understand maps for directions and technical information.
Communicate effectively and follow simple oral and written instructions.
Do not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
