
Developmental Assistant 1

Responsibilities
Supervise Direct Support Assistants and other direct care staff in the care, treatment, and habilitation of individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.
Determine staff assignments and reassignments; maintain time and attendance records; complete performance evaluations; arrange for and train staff in the implementation and documentation of services; monitor staff activities to ensure compliance with applicable guidelines.
Participate in the development of individual habilitation plans and implement or supervise portions including activities, programs, work, and leisure times; observe individuals’ reactions and progress; document and discuss observations with clinical and program staff.
Maintain and monitor household inventories; ensure proper use and availability of supplies and equipment; initiate requests for replacement or repair; supervise routine maintenance, minor repairs, and housekeeping activities to ensure a clean, healthy, and safe environment.
Manage individuals’ funds and related records; assist individuals in tracking their personal possessions and finances.
Provide or arrange transportation for individuals to and from recreational, social, work, school, or medical activities.
Respond to crisis situations and medical emergencies following established guidelines, procedures, and first‑aid techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of service as a Direct Support Assistant, Developmental Disabilities Secure Care Treatment Aide 1, or Licensed Practical Nurse and completion of a one‑year traineeship.
High school or high‑school equivalency diploma and one year of experience in the care, treatment, and habilitation of individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (for Developmental Assistant Trainee).
High school or high‑school equivalency diploma and two years of experience for Developmental Assistant 1.
Possess the minimum qualifications for this title as established by the Department of Civil Service; meet applicable mental and/or physical requirements; have a current Eligibility Letter from the NYS Department of Civil Service.
Applicants may be appointed to this title without a competitive exam due to the NY HELPS program, but eventual conversion to competitive status is expected within one year of permanent appointment.
Additional Qualifications
Open competitive appointment available for both trainee and full‑performance level.
Transfer possible under Section 70.1 or 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.
Local Bidding Agreements honored for CSEA positions; preference given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures.
Salary and Benefits
Developmental Assistant Trainee (SG 11): $57,839*
Developmental Assistant 1 (SG 12): $60,781*–$65,548*
