Position Information

The Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is seeking to fill Civil Engineer VI positions throughout the island.
Three (3) vacancies in the Wastewater Engineering and Construction Division across multiple branches:
Collection System Engineering Branch:
Responsible for the Collection System Engineering Section and engineering, design, and administrative work related to planning, directing, developing, and reviewing of plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering studies, and construction support for the City's gravity sewer improvements—including tunnels, interceptor sewers, medium-sized trunk sewers, and smaller sewers.
Construction Management Branch:
Responsible for management of Field Engineering Section C, including inspection of construction of any wastewater facility; administration of consultant contracts related to construction; ensuring professional development of staff and adherence to safety practices.
Plant Engineering Branch:
Responsible for the Plant Engineering Section and engineering, design, and administrative work related to planning, directing, developing, and reviewing of plans, specifications, cost estimates, engineering studies, and construction support for City wastewater facilities—including treatment facilities, air/odor control, monitoring, disposal, reuse, pump stations, and force mains.
Special Work Requirements
Occasional exposure to construction, traffic hazards, sewage gases, chemicals, paint fumes, noise, electrical hazards, and moving equipment.
Physical dexterity required for field investigations: climbing ladders, descending into trenches, tanks, and manholes, crawling through pipes, carrying sampling and testing equipment, walking on uneven surfaces.
Regular hours anticipated but may require shift, evening, night, weekend, or holiday work.
Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Citizenship: applicant must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non‑citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering specialty from a regionally accredited institution.
Experience: Three years of registered professional civil engineering experience, including or supplemented by one year of supervising or responsible for an engineering operation or function.
License: Current State of Hawaii registration as a professional Civil Engineer; possession of a valid Type 3 automobile driver's license.
