Summary
Seasonal Heavy Equipment Operator – Performs a variety of skilled tasks involving the operation of light to heavy-duty vehicles. Assists full‑time district crews with repairs, maintenance, and construction of county roads and other related tasks as directed by the District Manager. Operations of heavy trucks may include plowing snow, sanding roads, and transporting material for patching and construction to ensure safe transportation for all. The incumbent generally operates from established, well‑known procedures while applying standards of road maintenance to various situations and taking action within the parameters of the job. Works under the general direction of the district manager with regular supervision. The work is typically performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather conditions; during winter, the operator may encounter safety concerns related to unsafe driving conditions and other uncomfortable conditions. Low stress most of the time, but may involve high stress during long continuous days.
Essential Functions
Operates a variety of light, medium, and heavy trucks, mowers and other equipment used in the building and maintenance of County roads.
Uses a variety of hand tools as needed within the parameters of road and bridge building, maintenance, and repair.
Assists in the building, repair, and re‑building of new and substandard roads, including culvert installation, road shaping, hauling materials, etc.
May be asked to assist in preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles, including oil changes and greasing to minimize downtime.
Assists with regular road repair and maintenance through asphalt patching and sealing.
Uses a variety of small and large equipment to make such repairs.
Performs road maintenance duties by removing litter, stones, trees, dirt from slides, and other debris from roadways, bridges and other areas.
Cleans shoulders, ditches and other areas that impact the quality of the roadways.
May assist with the maintenance of ditches and drainage culverts, guardrails and fences, roadway signs, delineators, traffic control devices and other items and equipment that enhance the safety of County highways and drivers.
Performs winter road maintenance and snow removal through plowing, sanding and other activities to ensure roads remain passable; serves on call 24 hours, 7 days a week to respond to dangerous road conditions.
Assists with installation, repairs and replacement of signage as directed.
Maintains vegetation control by cutting, mowing and pruning, etc., using small and mechanized hand tools and power saws.
Communicates major equipment problems to the maintenance mechanic.
Ensures full‑time crew members are aware of equipment maintenance and repair issues.
Responsible for the safe operation and cleanliness of the equipment assigned; assists in maintaining shop cleanliness and organization.
Secondary Functions
May perform flagging duties in the absence of flaggers.
May perform general labor as needed for the completion of assigned projects.
May be required to assist the maintenance mechanic during major equipment repairs.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications
Sufficient combination of knowledge, skills and abilities to competently perform the essential functions of the job.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Two years of related experience in the use of light to heavy equipment required.
