
Landfill Equipment Operator (Local 20)

POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in skillfully operating large bulldozers, large hydraulic excavators, compactors and bucket loaders; operation of equipment requires an unusually high level of manipulative skill; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates bulldozer and compactor to grade, level, distribute and compact refuse and to apply cover dirt on refuse bank; operates excavator to generate or reclaim cover materials; operates finish grade bulldozer to apply sand and pea gravel on landfill liner system and for landfill site maintenance requiring finish grade applications; operates track loader and rubber tire loader to load tandem trucks with clay, stone and sand; performs minor cleaning and maintenance on equipment, and conducts routine inspections of equipment to insure proper operating condition; monitors landfill conditions and informs supervisory personnel of problem areas or conditions that impact upon EPA requirements; maintains equipment records as required; may operate other equipment such as a backhoe, flusher truck, tandem dump truck, or other less complicated equipment as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Operation and servicing of motorized, heavy earth-moving equipment.
Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the assigned work area.
Landfill construction techniques and purposes and functions of leachate and landfill liner systems.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations as they relate to landfill operations.
Skill in:
Operating a variety of heavy-duty earth-moving equipment.
Judging heights with respect to proper grading, filling or excavating work.
Directing the work activities of others.
Understanding and following accurately oral and written instructions.
Record keeping.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must be able to read at a tenth (10th) grade reading level.
Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Tests equivalency preferred.
Two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavy earth-moving equipment.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License without restrictions as to the operation of vehicles with air brakes.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Previous experience in landfill operations is preferred.
