Job Summary
To provide knowledge, motivation, and leadership in an activity in which the student can excel to their full potential while competing in an atmosphere that adds to total education, including physical well-being, moral character, and social and mental development.

Essential Functions of All Coaches

Instruct athletes regarding the techniques, rules, and safety practices of the sport.

Develop and organize practice programs. Schedule and conduct practices from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. according to agreed-upon schedules.

Supervise athletes from the beginning of practice or game until the last athlete is picked up, ensuring knowledge of all participants at all times.

Supervise athletes during activities in connection with athletic events, including practices, games, camps, and travel.

Promote the interscholastic program of the school and direct the program in harmony with the total school program.

Set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct, respecting and supporting contest officials.

Foster appreciation of the values of athletics, good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community.

Promote a healthy lifestyle to student-athletes.

Ensure athletes have completed required documentation, including medical insurance coverage form, and have passed required medical examinations before the regular practice season.

Communicate with parents regarding team rules and athletic department guidelines.

Hold conferences with parents/guardians as necessary about athletic performance or conduct.

Know and understand the student-athlete handbook.

Follow state, conference, and district regulations governing the athletic program.

Adhere to all safety laws and district policies.

Follow injury care and prevention procedures as documented in the Mead School District Athletic Policies and Procedures.

Complete and submit accident reports for any injury to the school principal or designee.

Recognize and adhere to an athlete's health plans.

Provide equal opportunities to all athletes per the student nondiscrimination policy.

Annually complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA-approved rule clinic for the sport being coached.

Hold valid first aid and CPR certifications.

Complete trainings required by the District and the WIAA.

Perform other related duties as assigned by District Administrators or the Athletic Director.

Additional Essential Functions for Head Coach

Work with the athletics director in scheduling practices and competitions.

Assist the Athletic Director with selection and evaluation of assistant coaches.

Assign duties to assistant coach/coaches as necessary.

Determine athlete participation during practices and games, including team level and playing time, in conjunction with assistants.

Establish and maintain behavior standards and provide proper supervision of athletes at all times.

Work with AD and Athletic Administrative Assistant to ensure lists of eligible players are prepared in accordance with district policies.

Communicate with AD and Building Administration regarding athletes and sports season topics.

Qualifications

Must be 19 or older for Assistant Coach and 21 or older for Head Coach.

Must have current First Aid/CPR certification or be able to acquire it by the start of the season.

Type II Driver’s License preferred.

Understand the activity/sport, its safety practices, techniques, rules, and progression of skill development.

Essential Criteria

Demonstrate a positive attitude toward students and the ability to motivate them toward developing a successful program.

Consistently meet schedule responsibilities for practice, coaching preparation, competition, and related activities.

Plan practices and events, and organize materials and personnel to carry out the activity.

Work with students, colleagues, parents, and officials in a positive, professional, and equitable manner.

Desired Criteria

Previous coaching experience at the secondary level.

Terms of Employment and Salary
As outlined by the collective bargaining agreement of Mead ExtraCurricular Employees Association (MECA) and the District policies.

The Salary Range for 6th Grade JV Basketball Coaches is a minimum of $1,324.00 to a maximum of $2,151.00 per contract. Documented paid coaching experience will be used for salary placement. Employees working post‑season activities receive a stipend.

Employees not employed in other District positions accrue one hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Eligibility for benefit-qualifying positions and standard benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Long‑Term Disability) are provided through the School Employee Benefits Board.
