Job Description
TITLE:
Custodian – School
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to a high‑school diploma or G.E.D. certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law, and demonstrated ability and experience in custodial work; possess the necessary literacy skills to fulfill the performance responsibilities of the job; be in good health as evidenced by completion of a physical examination.
REPORTS TO:
Principal and Maintenance Director
PRIMARY JOB GOAL:
To maintain the cleanliness, orderliness, and safety of the school building.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of modern public school buildings and the ability to apply this knowledge to the needs of the district;
Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance;
Knowledge of proper storage methods for equipment, materials, and supplies;
Knowledge of proper lifting techniques;
Flexibility to work a schedule that meets the demands of the job;
Literacy skills required to perform custodial tasks efficiently and effectively;
Clear communication skills;
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and meet schedules and timelines;
Capacity for heavy physical labor;
Ability to use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to predetermined standards;
Ability to develop effective working relationships with the entire school community;
Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all assigned tasks—including walking, pushing, stooping, bending, lifting, standing for extended periods, and working in uncomfortable positions—and ability to work outdoors in warm, cold, or inclement weather.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clean, buff, and vacuum all assigned classrooms and halls after each school day, ensuring floors remain clean and attractive.
If applicable, wax assigned rooms and halls on a regular basis as directed by the Principal.
Dust office and classroom furniture on a regular basis as directed by the Principal.
Arrange classroom furniture orderly at the end of each school day after cleaning the floor.
Clean all chalkboards in assigned rooms on a regular basis as directed by the Principal.
Empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers daily.
If applicable, clean light fixtures on a regular basis as directed by the Principal and replace burned‑out lights as needed.
If applicable, clean and disinfect water fountains each day.
If applicable, clean and dust lockers on a regular basis as directed by the Principal.
Maintain assigned restrooms hygienically clean daily by wet‑mopping floors with a disinfectant, cleaning sinks and fixtures, and replenishing paper towels, toilet paper, and soap as needed; clean mirrors and tile.
If applicable, sweep, wet‑mop, and buff the multipurpose room daily.
If applicable, wash windows inside and outside in assigned areas on a regular basis, and clean blinds and woodwork on a regular basis.
Operate cleaning machines, equipment, and tools efficiently, store all supplies, and maintain them in good working condition.
Make occasional minor building repairs—including basic plumbing fixtures and broken tiles.
Clean up after non‑school related activities held at the school as directed by the Principal.
Move furniture or equipment as required for various activities, and assemble furniture as directed by the Principal.
If applicable, set tables up and down each day for lunch, take garbage out after lunch and breakfast, and sweep and mop the cafeteria floor.
Assist in ordering supplies.
Pick up and rake paper, trash, and debris around school grounds, and clean walkways and entrances.
Pack, unpack, load, receive, and store books, supplies, materials, and other items.
Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to the Principal, and recommend maintenance repairs as needed.
Maintain building security and report suspicious or unauthorized individuals on campus.
Shovel, plow, and sand walkways and steps as directed by the Principal.
Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; follow Blood‑Borne Pathogen Training for disposal.
Maintain records of observed maintenance/repair needs and safety issues.
Participate in job or other training as required.
Participate in major summer cleaning projects as assigned.
Perform related duties and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent, the Maintenance Director, or the Principal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Heavy lifting, walking, standing, bending, climbing, and the use of hand tools are part of the job. The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals and occasionally to water or bodily fluids. The employee is expected to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to use personal protective equipment as trained.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Hours per day, days per year, and salary will be established by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
