General Summary
The Statutory Accountant, working in a hybrid environment, is responsible for supporting the preparation of statutory financial reports and related filings in compliance with state insurance department requirements, statutory accounting principles (SAP), and NAIC guidance. This role also supports U.S. GAAP accounting and reporting activities. The Statutory Accountant works under the direction of the Lead Statutory Accountant and Finance Management and collaborates with internal departments and external auditors to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting.
Duties And Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation of recurring state, federal, and corporate statutory filings.
Support quarterly and annual statutory insurance filings, including schedules, exhibits, and supporting documentation.
Prepare and record monthly journal entries and complete account reconciliations for statutory and GAAP reporting.
Assist with statutory and GAAP accounting for investment securities and related income.
Prepare analytical schedules and supporting workpapers for financial statements and filings.
Draft and/or assist with required footnotes for statutory and U.S. GAAP financial statements.
Monitor and apply changes in statutory accounting principles, NAIC guidance, and reporting requirements under the direction of the Lead Statutory Accountant.
Assist in responding to auditor requests and participate in statutory and GAAP audit support activities.
Follow documented procedures and internal controls to ensure audit‑ready and compliant reporting.
Participate in cross‑functional finance and accounting initiatives as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Statutory Accountant or Finance Management.
Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Minimum of two (2) years of accounting experience.
Experience supporting quarterly and annual statutory insurance filings is preferred.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., formulas, pivot tables, data analysis).
Experience with general ledger or financial reporting systems preferred.
Healthcare, insurance, or revenue cycle accounting experience preferred.
Skills And Abilities
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
Ability to interpret accounting and financial information.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently while managing deadlines.
Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and meet tight deadlines.
Knowledge of accounting principles, procedures, and financial analysis techniques.
