Job Title:
SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL
Job Goal:
To assist the certified staff member in achieving student learning objectives by working with individual students with special needs or small student groups to help them achieve skill levels as determined by the teacher, case manager, assessment materials, and/or their Individual Education Plans.
Preferred Qualifications
High school graduation required; some college preferred.
Competency in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Ability and temperament to motivate and work with special needs students.
Ability to follow teacher‑prepared instructions and lesson plans with minimal supervision.
Completion of Physical Management Training, CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogen training and other required training.
High School/Trade School degree preferred; Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Reports to
Certified teacher/administrator
Job Responsibilities
Assist the teacher in implementing special strategies for reinforcing learning.
Prepare and collect instructional materials as directed.
Monitor and document student progress and activities.
Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning and collect data.
Guide independent study, enrichment, and remedial work.
Assist students with study/organizational skills.
Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about a student.
Collaborate with instructional team members and parents.
Communicate via technology as appropriate.
Operate and care for classroom equipment and instructional materials.
Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, community visits and field trips.
Assist with large group activities and oral communication practices.
Assist students in school spaces such as library, cafeteria, music and art rooms.
Support behavior plans and therapies as demonstrated by certified staff.
Assist with lunch, snack, preparation, cleanup and bathroom routines.
Accompany students to/from bus or lavatory; ride on district bus or van.
Serve as a job coach for secondary students when required.
Help maintain and organize data collection materials and classroom displays.
Manage time to meet workload demands and student schedules.
Provide assistance to substitute teachers.
Participate in district staff development activities.
Communicate with parents if requested.
Report to building administrator when reassignment is needed.
Complete required training (Physical Management, CPR, First Aid, etc.).
Administer Epi‑pens as trained.
Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
Maintain positive professional relationships with coworkers.
Demonstrate flexibility and ability to respond to changing priorities.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Responsibility/Accountability
Responsible for the quality and quantity of own work as assigned.
Physical Demands
Walking, standing, bending, lifting, assisting with self‑care, toileting, providing physical management of students, maneuvering wheelchair.
Terms of Employment
184 day position.
Evaluation
Performance evaluated annually by immediate supervisor or administrator.
