PCSU INRMP Wildlife Technician Assistant – ID# 226243
Full‑Time, Limited‑Term (not to exceed six (6) months with possibility of extension) RCUH Non‑Civil Service position. Performing project tasks on land controlled by the U.S. Navy at Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam (JBPHH) on Oahu, Hawai‘i. Employment continues based on program/operational needs, satisfactory performance, funds, and compliance with laws.

Key Responsibilities
DUTIES: Performs office and fieldwork as part of the PCSU team supporting JBPHH. Conducts regular field monitoring for protected species (avian, mammalian, plant, and marine species). Supports efforts in the identification, protection, and enhancement of native species and ecosystems, with emphasis on rare, threatened, endangered species and unique ecosystems to the various sections of JBPHH on Oʻahu. Assists in clearing and maintaining trails to remote areas. Participates in a variety of projects to support Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) execution. This includes targeted surveys of protected species on base, and invasive and/or predatory species monitoring and trapping. Responds to reports of injured wildlife, which may potentially be outside of core working hours. Drives project vehicles to access field sites.

Primary Qualifications
Education

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience

One to three (1‑3) years of work experience in or related to managing natural resources. Experience must be documented well and acquired under the employment of an academic institution, governmental agency, private company, or non‑profit organization in the appropriate field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited two (2) year college or university may substitute one (1) year of experience).

Knowledge

Basic knowledge of the natural history of native Hawaiian wildlife. Basic familiarity with native Hawaiian ecosystems, plants, and wildlife. Familiarity with techniques used to inventory and monitor wildlife and other natural resource assets.

Abilities & Skills

Ability to work well in a team setting and independently on tasks. Ability to maintain a positive, professional attitude in support of a productive work environment. Must have good oral and written communication skills. Ability to take good field notes and record biological data with a global positioning system (GPS). Ability to collect, organize, and manage a variety of field data. Ability to use word‑processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.

Other Requirements

Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No‑Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain it throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance for employment as a Navy contractor. Must complete Wilderness First Aid training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain it. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must complete chainsaw training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain it. Must complete rappelling training within three (3) months from date of hire.

Physical & Medical Demands
Able and willing to conduct work under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g., extreme weather, thick brush, and steep terrain) on a secure military base. Ability to hike, camp, and work in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Must be able to lift up to forty‑five (45) pounds unassisted. Must be able to hike five (5) miles per day on uneven terrain. Must not be acrophobic.

Secondary Qualifications
Field experience working in Hawai‘i conducting active resource management to protect ecosystems. Knowledge of Department of the Navy natural resources programs in general, and the policy and organizational contexts within which they are managed.
