Facility Operations Assistant 1 – HVAC Department
The Facilities department at the University at Buffalo invites applications for our Facility Operations Assistant 1 position in the HVAC department.
Responsibilities
Assist in routine maintenance of equipment.
Perform specific tasks as directed in performing maintenance and repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment, steam, gas and water lines, and other related heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.
Carry out proactive maintenance on HVAC equipment, including lubricating machinery, replacing belts, replacing filters, cleaning equipment, and performing other preventive maintenance duties within boiler, chiller, pump, AHU and other mechanical equipment rooms.
Learn operating procedures for the various HVAC equipment on campus.
Participate in in‑service training courses and on‑the‑job instruction relative to HVAC operation and engineering.
Clean parts, equipment, equipment areas, and paint HVAC equipment and related areas.
Qualifications
Electrical and mechanical aptitude with a basic understanding of HVAC systems.
Detail qualifications and submit appropriate documentation with application.
Explain and demonstrate skills and competency for this position.
Communicate well with other employees and customers.
Possess and have demonstrated positive customer service skills.
Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Willing and able to respond to after‑hour calls for equipment and system failures that may arise at any time.
Possess basic knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment used in building automation systems (BAS) and demonstrate proficiency in safe use of hand and power tools required to perform work tasks.
Reliable attendance is essential.
Physical ability to perform the tasks of this position; able to understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
Valid New York State driver’s license is required if operating motor vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
HVAC experience.
HVAC training.
Basic electrical, plumbing and mechanical knowledge.
Physical Demands
Bending, twisting, ability to transport 50 pounds, ascend ladders, access equipment located on mezzanines, catwalks, basements and crawlspaces.
Ability to work off ladders, scaffolding, in confined spaces and/or where air monitoring may be required.
Work in loud
oisy dusty/dirty environments.
Work with or around high‑pressure steam, high‑voltage electrical systems and rotating equipment.
