Geospatial Special Consultant – Land Surveyor
Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a part‑time Professional Land Surveyor for the Springfield, Illinois office. The role focuses on both surveying and geospatial work for federal, state and local roadway projects across Indiana and beyond. The position supports teams from initial planning through design and construction, with a focus on reconstruction of major interstates and highways, urban and rural roadway rehabilitation, and replacements. It is a mid‑to‑senior level role that involves advanced expertise, continuous improvement, and increasing leadership responsibility.
Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities
Prepare right‑of‑way parcel documents using provided calculations and software, working efficiently with team members to ensure quality deliverables through project completion.
Design and support preparation of right‑of‑way plans for state and local projects.
Collaborate with senior technical staff and perform additional duties as assigned.
Preferred Specific Skill Set
Experience with Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, OpenRoads, Geopak Modeler (Legacy), or ESRI.
Adhere to project deadlines and keep supervisory staff informed of any difficulties.
Self‑direct, plan, prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work.
Read and interpret recorded deeds, legal descriptions, surveys, subdivision plats, historical right‑of‑way plans, codes and regulations to develop accurate drawings.
Maintain technical knowledge of computers, software, and design techniques.
Learn and adapt to new programs and adjust to changes in product and client demands.
Execute and adhere to quality assurance requirements.
Technical knowledge related to construction observation.
Field Survey Skill Set
Lead or assist survey crew with land surveying and field data collection activities.
Set up, operate, and maintain survey instruments and related equipment (GNSS/GPS equipment – RTK, static, and network‑based systems).
Collect accurate measurements, observations, and location data for topographic, boundary, construction, and as‑built surveys.
Mark and stake survey points according to project requirements.
Record, organize, and verify field notes and measurements.
Follow safety procedures and company standards while working outdoors.
Collaborate with surveyors and project team members to ensure data accuracy.
LiDAR Data Collection
Collect LiDAR data using terrestrial, mobile, and/or UAV‑mounted LiDAR systems.
Soft Skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to develop and present concepts.
Build effective relationships with internal and external client bases.
Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.
Strong sense of urgency and self‑initiative to meet client deadlines.
Clear communication with survey crews, engineers, and project managers.
Document field notes and survey observations accurately.
Collaborate with office staff to ensure data consistency and completeness.
Professional interaction with clients, contractors, and the public.
Working at Hanson
Collaborate remotely with colleagues in other offices.
Will accept out‑of‑town travel assignments and may work overtime to meet project demands.
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
