Summary:

Creates a flexible elementary grade program and a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establishes effective rapport with pupils, motivates them to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; establishes good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Demonstrate teaching skills and knowledge in assigned academic area, utilizing course of study adopted by the Governing Board and other appropriate learning activities.

Instruct pupils in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.

Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil and to best utilize available classroom time for instructional purposes.

Prepare current schedules, lesson plans and seating charts for use by a guest teacher.

Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, maintain permanent academic and attendance records, and prepare progress reports; maintain the confidentiality of each student’s record.

Establish and maintain lines of communication with students and parents regularly; communicate with parents to discuss pupils’ progress, particular needs or difficulties encountered in the school program; treat parents with respect when reviewing a child’s problems or progress.

Diagnose pupil needs; use appropriate methods to provide instruction to meet those needs and assist pupils in solving learning and attitude problems; seek the assistance of specialists or district resource persons to ascertain learning difficulties and appropriate services.

Maintain a learning atmosphere by creating an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers to meet the physical and psychological requirements of the students.

Maintain professional competence by participating in classes, workshops and other growth activities.

Select and requisition instructional aids and materials; maintain required inventory records.

Instruct assigned classes in locations and at the times designated by the principal/supervisor; report for duty and other assignments on time; supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.

Establish and maintain management and control of students in the classroom or under supervision.

Develop and explain rules for classroom discipline and consistently maintain discipline in the classroom.

Takes reasonable precautions to protect students’ safety, welfare and district property.

Disciplines students fairly and impartially, following district policies regarding students’ rights.

Assists in implementing policies, administrative regulations and procedures established by the Governing Board, district administration and unit school principal.

Assists other personnel as may be required; assists other teachers in implementing curriculum.

Collaborates with school personnel, parents and community agencies to improve student outcomes, develop solutions and plan curriculum.

Directs student workers, volunteers, etc. to maximize their efficiency and meet work requirements.

Reports incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain personal safety of students and positive learning environment and to adhere to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.

Perform other duties and assume responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze and interpret education materials and programs; write reports, procedure manuals and correspondence; effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, students, administration and community; communicate aims and objectives to students in a well‑planned, organized manner using clear and precise language.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Physical Demands
Requires talking, hearing, sitting for extended periods, moving, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, holding, grasping objects, climbing and balancing; may lift up to 25 pounds; requires close, distance, color, peripheral, depth and focus vision.

Work Environment
Primarily indoor temperature‑controlled setting with periods outdoors; moderate noise level.
