SUMMARY:

The Natural Areas Trails and Visitor Amenities Crew Member is a seasonal position with the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department. The role includes trail and fence construction, repair, and maintenance; trash and litter removal; vault toilet cleaning; sign installation; vegetation management such as mowing, weed whipping, and weed control; and other maintenance activities on natural area sites of varying size and composition. The position requires working 40 hours per week from roughly May through August on four 10‑hour days, with schedule options Monday‑Thursday or Tuesday‑Friday. Occasional weekend or evening coverage may also be necessary. No insurance or retirement benefits are provided for hourly positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Constructs and maintains soft surface trails
Removes trash and litter from natural area sites
Cleans vault toilets
Constructs and repairs kiosks, sign frames, fences, and boardwalks
Installs signs, benches, and other structures
Controls vegetation through mowing, weed whipping, cutting, and spraying herbicides
Assists with gravel parking lot grading operations, including use of heavy equipment
Operates, maintains, and performs minor repairs on equipment and vehicles (mowers, trucks, sprayers, water pumps, etc.)
Provides support for volunteer projects and may oversee volunteer groups
Works with integrity and maintains a safe work environment
Performs other related work as assigned
EQUIPMENT USED:

Various motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, small dump trucks, trailers, etc. Also operates specialized equipment such as mowers, rollers, weed whips, etc. May require use of various power and manual tools, including saws, drills, wrenches, etc. Occasional use of standard office equipment, including computers, is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to use basic hand and power tools
Ability to operate a variety of automotive and power equipment used for natural areas maintenance
Ability to perform mathematical calculations
Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, outside professionals, and the general public
Ability to work a variety of weekday, weekend, and holiday hours
Ability to work additional hours required for special events and emergency situations
Ability to successfully complete additional training
Ability to guide volunteer groups
Ability to use computers and other standard office equipment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School or general education degree (GED); college-level coursework in natural resources or related field preferred. College coursework and volunteer experience may substitute for work experience. Must be at least 18 years of age.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or fellow employees
REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current Driver's License.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms, carry, talk, hear, and traverse uneven surfaces and terrain; occasionally required to climb, balance, twist, push, and pull. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
