Description:
Assists the school bus driver during daily routes with student behavior, loading and unloading of students and student safety practices and procedures.
Essential Functions
Be prompt and on time for all school bus routes
Notify the supervisor in case of illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver
Help maintain positive control over the students transported on the school bus
Observe mandatory safety regulations for school buses
Help maintain pupil control and report any violations to the proper authorities as prescribed
Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and the clean/orderly appearance of the school bus
Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student medical records
Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
Attend meetings and in-services as required
Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens
Assist bus driver with the loading and unloading of students during the daily bus routes
Check and ensure each student is appropriately seated before bus movement and maintains that seating throughout the route
Maintain appropriate certification as required by regulations established by the Superintendent
Assist the bus driver in daily cleaning of the bus
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Ability to obtain a CPI certification within the first year of employment and renew yearly to remain in compliance with Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, and the Board of Education
Report all accidents and complete required reports
Enforce applicable Board policies
Be available in the event of emergency dismissal
Assist the bus driver in bus maintenance checks
Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
Operate wheelchair lift and the down equipment necessary for the safety of the student
Assist driver in keeping student daily records as required by Transportation Supervisor
Assist in conducting periodic bus evacuation drills
Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor
Qualifications
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Less than one year related experience
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work effectively with others
Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
Effective, active listening skills
Organizational and problem solving skills
Ability to have full control with bus discipline at all times
Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
Ability to be patient and understanding
Equipment Operated
Wheelchairs, child car and booster seat mechanisms, child restraint (harness)
Additional Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue
Frequent interaction among unruly children
Occasional extensive sitting, up to 2 hours at a time
Occasional requirement to stand and walk
Frequent requirement to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, read, hear, and see (occasional color vision required)
Occasional requirement to lift and carry up to a maximum of 50 pounds (receives assistance for lifts over 50 pounds)
Occasional requirement to push and pull up to a maximum of 300 pounds (on wheels)
Occasional overtime work will be requested and expected of the employee
