Summary
Under general supervision, plans, leads, assigns, schedules, and participates in the work of staff responsible for performing aquatics duties at the District’s aquatics facility. Assists with day‑to‑day aquatic operations, ensures that the facility is prepared and maintained for public use, monitors activities in the water, pool, decks, and ancillary areas to ensure patron safety, explains and enforces aquatics policies, performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed, and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification is responsible for providing lead direction and training to lower‑level staff and ensuring that the District’s aquatics facility is maintained in a safe and effective working condition. Incumbents establish objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services and exercise higher‑level independent judgment than the basic Lifeguard.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, lead, assign, and participate in staff responsible for lifeguard duties; assign staff to daily rotation schedules to ensure proper coverage at all times.

Respond to patron questions, concerns, and complaints; determine issues and resolve or refer to Activities Supervisor or Athletic Director as appropriate.

Assist Activities Supervisor in leading training sessions, including safety drills and emergency procedures; ensure lifeguard staff attend required trainings and maintain records.

Perform aquatic safety and supervision for patrons; monitor activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas to prevent accidents and ensure safety and well‑being of patrons.

Implement and monitor District policies and procedures; enforce aquatics regulations and caution patrons regarding unsafe activities.

Perform work of lower‑level staff, including lifeguard‑training skills and class instruction as needed.

Monitor facility use; ensure that the facility is opened, closed, and secured in compliance with District practices and that pool and restrooms are maintained in a safe, neat, and clean condition.

Inspect and maintain swimming and pool equipment for functionality; ensure proper placement and availability; recommend maintenance and repair as needed.

Maintain records of participation and complete required reports.

Assist with District special events as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED.

Two years of relevant aquatics experience in an aquatic facility.

Combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of:

Principles of leadership in an aquatic environment.

Principles and techniques of all lifeguarding skills.

Organization and operation of the aquatic facility, including maintenance, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.

Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Operational characteristics of water rescue safety equipment and devices.

Customer service practices.

Recordkeeping principles and practices.

Modern office practices and computer applications related to the work.

Ability to:

Assign staff to daily rotation schedules and ensure proper patron and staff safety.

Provide staff leadership and direction.

Assist with training.

Monitor and enforce law, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Administer first aid, CPR, and AED as needed.

Maintain order and safety in a crowded and noisy environment.

Maintain facility and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.

Perform work efficiently, effectively, safely, and timely.

Demonstrate strong customer service skills and foster positive relationships.

Organize work independently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.

Use English effectively in person, over the phone, and in writing.

Licenses and Certifications

American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification (highly desirable).

Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification.

Physical Demands
Work is performed primarily in a public swimming pool environment. Requires stamina for moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment, moving children and adults, and staying in the pool for prolonged periods. Must possess mobility for standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, and swimming while wearing protective gear. Vision and hearing sufficient for crowded and noisy conditions. Must swim distances and dive to pool depths and lift 150 pounds or heavier with assistance or proper equipment.

Environmental Elements
Incumbents work indoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions, may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals, and may experience blood and body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR. Interaction with individuals is required for enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

Working Conditions
Irregular work schedule may include weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
