Specific Job Information

The position focuses on black bear, grizzly bear, and mountain lion conflict issues in the Cabinet-Yaak Ecosystem of NW Montana. Work involves education and outreach focused on prevention and mitigation, with communication and interaction with landowners on private lands in Lincoln and Sanders Counties. The position is stationed in Libby, MT. FWP housing may be available.

Job Duties

Assist with the implementation of regional grizzly bear, black bear, and mountain lion management activities. Prevent and respond to human‑carnivore conflicts, particularly between humans and bears. Utilize conflict prevention and resolution tools, including construction of temporary and permanent electrified fences. Instruct the public and interagency personnel on conflict prevention techniques, bear‑aware methods, bear spray, and electrified fencing. Acquire or hold certification on safe capture and handling of wildlife (required). Participate in captures, handling, relocation, and humane euthanasia of large carnivores, and collect, enter, and compile data for annual reports. Coordinate with other wildlife conflict specialists, biologists, wardens, agency staff, and the public to resolve and prevent conflicts.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Effective communication skills and a positive attitude. Ability to work in variable weather, tolerating pungent odors, and to physically handle injured or dead large wildlife. Work and drive long hours, hike long distances with backpack, and operate safely in habitats with large carnivores, alone and as part of a team. Public speaking and interaction at events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and experience with wildlife conflict prevention methods and tools, particularly electrified fencing.
Maintain professionalism with challenging public members (required).
Experience with large carnivores.
Human‑wildlife conflict management experience.
Safe capture of large carnivores using culvert traps.
Use of chemicals to immobilize large carnivores.
Collection of biological samples (blood, teeth, tissues).
Basic knowledge of wildlife biology, ecology, anatomy, and carnivore population dynamics (required).
Tolerate pungent odors and handle injured/dead wildlife (required).
Understanding of societal values of wildlife.
Managing large carnivores in urban and rural environments (required).
Use of ground telemetry equipment (required).
Good written and verbal communication skills (required). Public speaking preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills (required).
Safely tow and backup live‑animal trailers; drive long highway distances and steep mountain roads with trailers (required).
Work under direct supervision and independently (required).
Work alone and as a team member (required).
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience)

Minimum of two years of college work toward a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or related field, plus related work experience.

Salary

Hourly rate: $24.44 per hour.
