Position Summary

The Lay Coach for Interscholastic Athletics carries out the objectives of the sports program as outlined by the head coach. The coach instructs athletes in team and individual fundamentals, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. The coach ensures that the program complies with local and state practices and reports to the Head Coach in conjunction with the Athletic Director and Principal.
Essential Duties

Instruct student athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while fostering positive moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and confidence.
Assist in the implementation of the program as outlined by the head coach and remain loyal and supportive, even when philosophical differences exist.
Carry out scouting responsibilities as assigned by the head coach. If required, assume the role of head coach and perform duties such as assisting the head coach, issuing, fitting, and monitoring the condition of equipment, developing booster clubs and fundraising, promoting revenue from APS events, scheduling, and providing transportation to all games and tournaments.
Assist in preparing practices and games in coordination with the Physical Education and Maintenance Departments.
Assist in collecting documentation to fulfill state and district requirements concerning physical exams, consent, and eligibility, and attend staff meetings for planning and evaluating the program.
Support student retention strategies.
Promote and encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and ethical standards of conduct both on and off the field.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Head Coach of the sport.
Maintain a current athletic handbook listing detailed information regarding policies, procedures, and practices.
Conduct oneself in a manner that exemplifies self-control and the promotion of good sportsmanship.
Assist with maintaining a yearly inventory of all new and used equipment.
Sends information and correspondence to student athletes and parents.
Maintain certification in first aid and CPR.
Minimum Requirements

Education:

Athletics or Physical Education.
Work Experience:

Experience working within an athletics program in a K-12 environment.
Certification:

GHSA Community/Lay coach certified; Valid Driver's License; Certification in first aid and CPR.
Stipend

Stipend: Amount varies based on sport.
Physical Abilities and Working Conditions

Vision:

Ability to read small print and view a computer screen for prolonged periods.
Hearing:

Ability to tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.
Speech:

Ability to be understood in face‑to‑face communications, to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone or computer.
Upper Body Mobility:

Ability to use hands to grasp and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head. Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict.
Environmental Requirements:

Ability to encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.
Mental Requirements:

Ability to read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy, compare, compile and coordinate information and records; understand how to manage stress.
