Optomi, in partnership with our client, are seeking a hands‑on
Physical Data Center Network Engineer
with strong experience in data center environments, particularly focused on
connectivity, cabling, and physical infrastructure .
This role will support daily operations within a San Antonio‑based data center, working closely with architects and engineers to execute tasks related to racking, patching, and troubleshooting.
This is a contract position with possible extensions. W2 only, no C2C/sponsorship provided.
Key Responsibilities
Perform rack and stack, cabling, and patching of network and server equipment
Execute physical layer connectivity tasks, including fiber and copper installations
Troubleshoot hardware and network connectivity issues within the data center
Support break/fix activities and assist with incident resolution
Work with SFP modules, fiber types, and breakout configurations (e.g., 100G to 40G/25G)
Follow direction from network architects and engineers for implementation tasks
Maintain accurate documentation of cabling, hardware, and configurations
Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance
Participate in change windows, including occasional off‑hours work (with adjusted time)
Required Qualifications
4–8 years of data center experience, with strong emphasis on physical infrastructure
Proven hands‑on experience with:
Data center connectivity and cabling (fiber and copper)
SFP types, transceivers, and fiber standards
Structured cabling systems and patching best practices
Solid understanding of network hardware and server infrastructure
Experience troubleshooting connectivity and hardware issues in a data center
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
Strong organizational, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with:
Arista switching environments
Legacy environments such as Cisco UCS
Experience with fiber breakout configurations and high‑speed networking (40G/100G)
Schedule & On‑Call
Standard onsite work schedule with flexibility required for change windows
Rotational on‑call support every other week (after initial onboarding period)
Weekend work may be required; time will be adjusted during the following week
