Responsibilities

The Roadway Technician is responsible for

asphalt testing and quality control

to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards. Work is performed with minimal supervision, following established procedures, with occasional checks during progress and review upon completion. This role requires

good judgment, attention to detail, and adherence to safety practices

at all times.
Typical work hours:

8–14 hours per day , Monday through Friday (day or night shift).
Weekend work may be required depending on contract schedules.
Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%).

Safety & Compliance

Follow all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
Report unsafe conditions immediately to supervisor or Safety & Health Manager.
Maintain a clean and orderly work area in compliance with Sunrock, MSHA, and OSHA standards.
Testing & Quality Control

Perform asphalt sample testing and analysis to confirm compliance with specifications.
Conduct on-site material and gravity testing.
Perform quality control checks of contractor operations and maintain accurate records.
Monitor gauges, dials, and equipment to ensure proper functionality.
Equipment Operation

Assemble, operate, and maintain field and laboratory testing and mechanical equipment.
Use calculators, nuclear gauges, and perform random number testing as needed.
Technical Knowledge & Communication

Understand asphalt lay-down, breakdown rolling, and finish rolling processes.
Communicate effectively with paving foremen and team members to ensure smooth operations.
Report equipment or safety issues immediately.
Participate in team efforts to meet departmental and company goals.
Provide leadership through example and knowledge sharing.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED preferred, but not required.
Minimum of

two (2) years of related experience

required.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to read and understand simple instructions, memos, and correspondence in English.
Ability to write simple correspondence and communicate effectively one-on-one or in small groups.
Basic math skills: add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates/ratios/percentages, and interpret graphs.
Strong problem-solving and common-sense decision-making skills.
Intermediate computer skills: email, recordkeeping, databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics.
Ability to

prioritize tasks, handle multiple assignments, and work in fast-paced environments .
