Job Summary
Lead Mechanical CAD Designer is a highly experienced individual contributor responsible for the end-to-end mechanical CAD design, configuration‑aware design, and lifecycle support of complex mechanical systems, including chillers, coolant distribution units (CDUs), thermal subsystems, enclosures, structural frameworks, and fluid piping assemblies. This role requires deep hands‑on expertise in advanced parametric modeling, configuration‑aware design, and manufacturing documentation. The engineer independently executes complex designs, owns model and drawing integrity, and serves as a key technical contributor in cross‑functional product development efforts throughout concept, NPI, production and sustaining phases.
Job Title: Lead Mechanical CAD Designer
Organization: Data Center Infrastructure Team
Location: Austin, TX – or Remote
*
Requires up to 25% domestic and/or international travel (rare)
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical CAD Design & System Integration
Independently design and maintain complex mechanical assemblies using advanced parametric CAD modeling in SolidWorks and/or Creo.
Develop detailed layouts and assemblies encompassing structural elements, enclosures, piping systems, thermal components, pumps, valves, and mounting interfaces.
Ensure mechanical designs meet performance, thermal, structural, manufacturability, serviceability, and customer requirements.
Resolve system‑level mechanical integration challenges, including packaging constraints and interface definition.
ConfigurationAware Design & Lifecycle Execution
Execute configuration‑ and revision‑controlled CAD designs supporting multiple product variants, options, and revisions within a common platform.
Maintain stability and integrity of complex models as engineering changes are introduced over time.
Implement engineering changes (ECR/ECNs), ensuring traceability, compatibility with released configurations, and minimal disruption to production.
Ensure consistent alignment between CAD models, drawings, BOMs, and PLM data across all lifecycle stages.
Manufacturing & Documentation
Produce and maintain production‑ready manufacturing drawings, applying expert‑level GD&T, tolerance stack‑ups, materials, finishes, and inspection quality requirements.
Design parts and assemblies with strong consideration for DFM/DFA, fabrication methods, welding, machining, and final assembly.
Support prototype builds, pilot production, and manufacturing issue resolution through rapid design updates and documentation corrections.
Ensure designs support repeatable, high‑yield manufacturing across multiple sites, suppliers, and production volumes.
CrossFunctional Technical Collaboration
Work closely with electrical engineering to coordinate mechanical-electrical interfaces, routing paths, and packaging clearances.
Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and production teams to address build issues, component changes, and all feedback.
Provide technical input during design reviews, release readiness assessments, and product change discussions.
Contribute to the refinement of CAD standards, modeling practices, and documentation quality through hands‑on execution.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
8+ years of hands‑on mechanical CAD design experience with complex, multi‑component assemblies.
Expert proficiency in Creo and/or SolidWorks, including advanced parametric modeling methodologies.
Strong command of GD&T, tolerancing, and manufacturing documentation.
Proven experience executing configuration‑controlled designs across multiple product variants and lifecycle phases.
Ability to independently own complex technical work with minimal oversight.
Preferred Experience
Power and cooling system experience (Switchgear, PDC, UPS, Busway, chillers, CDUs, liquid cooling platforms, or thermal management systems).
Experience with fluid systems design, including piping, fittings, valves, pumps, filters, and heat exchangers.
Background in industrial, infrastructure, or data center‑class equipment.
Familiarity with PLM systems and formal product release and change processes; experience supporting NPI and sustaining engineering in production environments.
Core Competencies
Senior‑level hands‑on CAD execution
High technical rigor and attention to detail
Strong configuration and documentation discipline
Systems‑level mechanical problem solving
Effective collaboration without managerial responsibility
Ability to operate in fast‑paced, change‑driven engineering environments
About the Data Center Infrastructure (DCI) Team
The DCI team consists of technical subject matter experts who specialize in end‑to‑end large‑scale physical infrastructure that powers and enables modern data centers. This includes power distribution systems such as transformers, substations, generators, switchgear, switch panels, busways, ATS units, EDPM, BMS systems, and control panels, as well as cooling solutions ranging from traditional evaporative and indirect cooling systems to emerging liquid cooling technologies including chillers, heat exchangers, CDUs, pumps, and secondary fluid networks. The team also addresses the mechanical structures that house these systems – hot aisle containment, steel enclosures, blanking panels, cable trays, and fiber and networking infrastructure.
The DCI team operates as a cross‑industry center of excellence, partnering primarily with various cloud providers across the industry. Team members function as deeply technical subject matter experts who engage directly with customers and supply chain partners to assess requirements, identify challenges, and design infrastructure solutions end‑to‑end. The ideal contributor brings engineering‑level expertise in either power or cooling disciplines, a working knowledge of the full infrastructure dependency chain, and the ability to translate that expertise into clear recommendations and collaborative problem‑solving with both technical and business stakeholders.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay range: $105,100 – $189,200. Job‑related, non‑discriminatory factors used to determine the actual offered rate include qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data, and consideration of internal equity.
Short‑term incentive based on performance. Additional benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance plans; paid time off accruing at a rate of 3.07 hours during the first year of employment; 4 weeks of paid parental leave; 11 company‑paid holidays (9 fixed holidays and 2 optional floating holidays) in 2026; 401(k) retirement plan; and employee stock purchase plan.
