Legal Process Clerk I / II
The Shasta County Public Defender’s Office is hiring Legal Process Clerks at two levels: I (entry‑level) and II (journey level). Both roles involve acceptance, processing, and typing of legal documents under supervision, ensuring accuracy and completeness before filing.
Legal Process Clerk I Responsibilities
Receive and process legal documents for criminal, civil, juvenile, family law, child support, and probate actions.
Check and issue subpoenas, summonses, writs of execution, and other court documents.
Enter documents into the register of action and initially calendar cases.
Index and cross‑index proceedings, search records for prior actions, and maintain accurate filing.
Collect fees, make change, write receipts, and maintain trust/account records.
Prepare court calendars, receive calls, and direct callers to appropriate personnel.
Assist attorneys, investigators, social workers, and public with information requests.
Perform data entry, filing of booking reports, and miscellaneous paperwork.
Maintain confidentiality of information in accordance with department policy and applicable laws.
Legal Process Clerk II Responsibilities
Same core duties as Level I with additional responsibilities, including maintaining trust account ledgers.
Perform routine checks and issuances of subpoenas, summonses, writs of execution, and other court documents.
Handle higher volume and critical legal documents, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
Act as an information source regarding department policies and procedures.
Execute same data‑entry, filing, and public‑service tasks as Level I, with increased oversight and independence.
Minimum Qualifications
Legal Process Clerk I:
One year of paid or unpaid experience in an office setting processing and typing documents or performing related office support duties.
Legal Process Clerk II:
One year of experience comparable to that of a Legal Process Clerk I with Shasta County.
Special Requirements
Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Employees who operate County vehicles must meet automobile insurability requirements.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Regularly required to sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
Occasional lifting or moving up to 10 pounds.
Work environment typically moderate noise level.
