
Engineer in Training I, Construction - Denver

The Engineer-in-Training (EIT) position is an entry‑level Construction Inspection role within the Colorado Department of Transportation – Region 1's central section. The incumbent will develop engineering expertise, apply engineering standards to project design, and supervise construction to ensure compliance with contract plans and specifications.
Responsibilities
Assist the Construction Project Engineer (≈35 %) with payment calculations, field measurements, and site inspections.
Perform construction inspection under the Project Engineer’s supervision (≈50 %) to verify methods, materials, and workmanship meet specifications.
Provide project design assistance (≈15 %) including design of roadways, bridges, culverts, and pavement markings, and prepare plans and specifications.
Maintain detailed inspection records, daily diaries, and support financial reporting, including updates to the federal financial plan.
Assist with contract change orders, drafting memoranda, and documenting project activities.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and wear required personal protective equipment.
Perform any additional related duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Generally daytime hours, Monday‑Friday; night or weekend work may be required during the construction season (April‑November).
Drive to field offices and progress meetings; overnight travel may be required for out‑of‑town projects.
Field inspections often require work outside in various weather conditions.
Must operate CDOT vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology from an accredited college or university (degree must be conferred before the date of hire).
Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern or valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in civil engineering design and construction for transportation projects.
Knowledge of CDOT and AASHTO manuals and specifications.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and in teams, manage multiple assignments, and meet deadlines.
Fluency with engineering software (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project) and experience with CDOT project documents.
Passion for safety and commitment to work outdoors for field inspections.
