Fiber Installation Technician

Overview
The Fiber Installation Technician is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, and disconnecting cable services, including video, data, and telephone. The role involves hands‑on field work installing, maintaining, troubleshooting fiber‑optic and coaxial cable systems and related equipment, and providing customer support.

Responsibilities

Install, splice, and terminate fiber‑optic cables and connectors in indoor and outdoor settings.

Conduct testing and quality assurance checks to verify functionality and performance of installed fiber connections.

Perform routine maintenance and repair of fiber‑optic equipment and network infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted service.

Maintain detailed records of installations, repairs, and equipment used; generate accurate reports on work completed.

Interact with customers in a professional, customer‑focused manner, addressing inquiries and providing technical support.

Maintain a safe work environment, following safety policies and reporting incidents.

Collaborate with colleagues and teams to resolve complex technical issues and coordinate network expansion projects.

Accurately manage inventory and device counts.

Participate in educational opportunities to update job knowledge.

Apply personal ethics, honesty, initiative, flexibility, and responsibility in all work assignments.

Accurately report all time worked and communicate any concerns to management or human resources.

Maintain punctual, regular, and consistent attendance.

Monitor performance through scorecard reports.

Other Duties

Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Mentor new employees as needed.

Attend scheduled team meetings.

Cross‑train on additional services to meet customer demand.

Represent MasTec Advanced Technologies and partners to customers with professionalism, proper ID, and uniform.

Perform general clerical work such as filing, copying, mailing.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and organize effectively.

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

Physical ability to walk over various terrains, carry tools, and operate ladders up to 32 ft.

Capability to use weight‑bearing equipment and safety harnesses within weight limits.

Skill in measuring distances with tapes and other devices.

Ability to work at heights, climb poles and towers, and perform tasks in tight spaces.

Strong hand–eye coordination and ability to handle small components and wires.

Proficiency with handheld communication devices and applications.

Willingness to travel to assigned territories, including inclement weather.

Knowledge of computer operating systems and consumer/commercial communication devices.

Accurate documentation and file‑keeping skills.

Moderate understanding of IP networks and basic TDM concepts.

Ability to operate relevant test equipment such as signal level meters and ohm meters.

Strong map reading skills for route planning.

Knowledge of NEC, NESC, OSHA, and related installation regulations.

Consistent punctual attendance; able to work nights, weekends, and overtime as required.

Good vision, including close, peripheral, and focus adjustment.

Ability to work in a moderate‑noise environment and with animals or construction sites.

Education

High School Diploma or GED; technician training or certification in fiber optics is a plus.

Experience

Previous experience in fiber‑optic cable installation and FTTH deployment.

Knowledge of splicing and termination techniques.

Familiarity with FTTH equipment and hardware.

Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.

Physical fitness and adaptability to various environmental conditions.

Working Conditions
Requires daily travel and driving to job sites; a valid driver’s license is mandatory. Work involves standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lb, climbing ladders up to 40 ft, and exposure to extreme weather. Overtime, weekend, and evening work are common, especially during busy seasons.
