Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field
Valid Texas Teacher’s Certificate in related field with required special education endorsements
CAPE certification preferred
Experience/Ability to work with school staff and parents
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, guidelines and procedures, and special education laws
Ability to communicate with educators, parents, students and community members
Ability to instruct students and support their unique needs
Knowledge of adapted physical education assessments and how to utilize them to evaluate student eligibility for services
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal setting/implementation
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Administer Adapted Physical Education (APE) evaluations and prepare written reports of evaluation
Participate in ARD Committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures
Plan and implement adapted physical education services
Assist teachers in making changes in the PE program which promote student growth and development (e.g., assist with IEP development and determination of appropriate accommodations)
Lead instruction in physical, recreation, and leisure skills for special education students, including Special Olympics activities during the school day
Provide adapted physical education information to principals, teachers, and parents
Provide district with current information and professional development training on all phases of adapted physical education as needed
Perform liaison duties between Northwest ISD and community agencies/other outside resources
Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students
Use effective verbal and written communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students\' maturity levels, interests, and needs
Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook
Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the adapted physical education program and implement changes based on the findings
Assist in the selection of equipment and adaptive materials
Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents
Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy
Comply with all district, local campus & department expectations, and regulations
Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignments
Complete required SHARS billing
Other duties as assigned
SHARS / MAC / RMTS

Northwest ISD participates in the School Health and Related Services (SHARS) and MAC programs which allows our district to request Medicaid reimbursement for certain health-related services. The ARD committee determines SHARS services. Training will be provided for SHARS, RMTS (Random Moment in Time Studies), and MAC (Diagnosticians and non-Personal Care Providers only). Training begins at the start of each school year and as needed for new hires.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Classroom management and physical management of students. Frequent standing, lifting, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. Position requires frequent bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, overhead reaching, sitting, and keyboarding. Position requires the ability to lift 25 pounds to waist high.
