Think you’ve got what it takes to keep Maine’s first television station on the air? Join WABI’s 10‑week paid Engineering Internship and get real, hands‑on experience in broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems with a front‑row seat to full‑time opportunities across Gray Media’s 113 stations nationwide.

General Responsibilities

Own the role:

Step into a real broadcast engineering position and take on hands‑on tasks that directly support live newscasts, studio productions, and post‑production operations that reach thousands of Mainers every single day.

Get your hands dirty (literally):

Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems and software from studio audio/video systems and routing to networking infrastructure and transmission equipment.

Support live operations:

Help ensure all equipment is operating correctly before and during live event broadcasts – learning to identify, correct, and document technical problems with the appropriate sense of urgency.

Drive the technology forward:

Support IT‑based workflows, digital systems, and streaming platforms across baseband, RF, and IP‑based systems.

Keep us compliant:

Learn FCC operational standards and broadcast compliance practices.

Keep us on the air:

Assist with preventative maintenance, equipment inspections, and documentation of configuration changes that keep our operation running at peak performance.

Qualifications/Requirements

Current enrollment:

College junior or senior pursuing a degree in Broadcast Technology, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

“Doer” mindset:

Not afraid to roll up sleeves, pick up a tool, and tackle a technical challenge head‑on. Ready to work, not just watch.

Tech curiosity:

Foundational understanding of professional audio/video equipment, computer networking, and operating systems, and hunger to learn more.

Strong work ethic:

Brings urgency, organization, a positive attitude, and a “can‑do” spirit to every shift; works well with others across departments and disciplines.

Reliability:

Ready to commit to the full 10‑week program, 25‑hour weekly schedule, and occasional flexible hour demanded by a live, 24/7 broadcast environment.

Physical readiness:

Ability to perform basic physical tasks, including bending and lifting up to 50 lbs; occasional work on ladders or in confined spaces may be required.

Passion for local media:

Care about the community and desire to see firsthand how local television technology makes a real difference every single day.

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
