
Junior Engineer - Extra Help

ABOUT THE POSITION
Under supervision, assist in professional field and office engineering work in connection with the design and construction of roads, bridges, drainage systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and other public works facilities; and to do other work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in preparing plans and specifications for the construction, alteration, and maintenance of a wide variety of civil engineering facilities, including roads, drainage, bridges, and buildings.
Assist in designing road improvements and preparing plans, profiles, cross-sections, and other details, including quantity estimates.
Act as resident inspector on minor construction projects.
Conduct responsible technical research and prepare reports.
Inspect construction work in progress for adherence to specifications.
Assist in preparation of progress payments, contract change orders, progress reports, and other related documents.
Assist in reviewing and conditioning various maps and plans concerning land use activities.
Perform other engineering work in a trainee capacity, including working with sub‑professional engineers.
QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, land surveying, or a closely related field from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)‑accredited institution, or a valid certificate as an Engineer in Training issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists (EIT) which may substitute for the specified education.
Knowledge of basic principles of physics, chemistry, and mathematics as applied to civil engineering; surveying, graphic statics, stress analysis, and mechanics; strength, properties, and uses of engineering construction and maintenance materials.
Ability to learn principles and methods in the design and construction of public works facilities such as roads, bridges, drainage, and other facilities; make accurate mathematical computations and engineering notes; analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; review and interpret land use maps and plans.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
