Job Description
General Definition of Work

The elementary school teacher, under moderate supervision, performs instructional work with limited decision‑making discretion, providing leadership in the educational environment that encourages and nurtures learning for all students. The teacher supervises, monitors, and evaluates students while developing lesson plans to ensure all student needs are met. The employee performs school‑based work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the principal.

Responsibilities

Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.

Adhere to the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.

Assist school administration in implementing policies and rules governing student life and conduct, develop classroom behavior rules, and maintain a fair and just order in the classroom.

Create a culture of effectiveness by setting high standards and expectations for all students.

Plan and implement a program of study in the assigned content area that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of assigned students.

Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods.

Create a classroom environment that facilitates student engagement and achievement of learning objectives.

Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, establishing clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicating these to students.

Establish learning objectives based on student needs, NCDPI requirements, the Standard Course of Study, and district curriculum framework.

Prepare for assigned classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.

Diagnose learning challenges regularly, seek assistance from central office staff as needed, and maintain accurate records for IEPs and 504 Plans.

Provide an instructional program for all students, including those with disabilities and limited English proficiency.

Prepare materials and classroom activities, offering opportunities for exploration, manipulation, and imaginative play.

Encourage exploration and perseverance through challenges.

Use techniques that promote critical, creative, and evaluative thinking.

Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to assess student progress.

Assign and grade classwork and homework.

Act as test administrator for the North Carolina Test Program per state guidelines.

Observe and assess student performance, behavior, social development, and physical needs regularly.

Meet with parents/guardians to discuss progress, set priorities, allocate resources, and encourage involvement.

Collaborate with parents, counselors, and administrators to resolve behavioral and academic challenges.

Implement enrichment programs and remediation as needed.

Attend PLC and staff meetings for data analysis and instructional planning.

Participate in professional development to acquire and improve skills and knowledge.

Perform safety functions and drills to maintain a safe instructional environment.

Perform related work as assigned or required.

Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum principles, standards, and expectations in the assigned area.

Ability to utilize appropriate data to inform instructional decisions.

Understanding of learning styles, curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment, diagnosis, and related research.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Proficiency in computers and software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.

Capability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice.

Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily operations.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree required.

Valid NC Teaching certification or eligibility for certification in the assigned area.

Equivalently combined education and experience.
