PICU Clinical Nurse Specialist or Quality and Practice Advisor
Location: 725 Welch Rd, Palo Alto, CA
Schedule: Day – 10 Hour shift, 40 hours/week
Employment: Full‑time

Job Summary
This role combines advanced clinical practice with evidence‑informed practice improvement. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Quality and Practice Advisor (QPA) are responsible for enhancing patient care, standards of nursing practice, and quality outcomes in a specific clinical area, working closely with interdisciplinary teams.

Clinical Nurse Specialist Responsibilities

Provide and evaluate advanced nursing care for patients with complex health needs within the PICU.

Develop and implement assessment tools and standards of practice, collaborating with staff to improve documentation and patient outcomes.

Lead education and training initiatives for nursing staff on advanced practice, patient assessment, and therapeutic interventions.

Serve as a consultant to physicians, nurses, patients, and families, offering guidance on clinical priorities and care plans.

Engage in clinical research and quality improvement projects, monitoring indicators and contributing to evidence‑based practice dissemination.

Maintain licensure and certifications; support compliance with Joint Commission Requirements and hospital policies.

Quality and Practice Advisor Responsibilities

Facilitate improvement work by collecting and analyzing data trends to develop evidence‑based practice changes.

Represent clinical practice in a subspecialty area, educating team members and leading change initiatives.

Consult across inter‑professional teams to enhance patient outcomes and practice compliance.

Apply quality improvement cycles and change management principles to monitor safety and quality metrics.

Support hospital quality improvement program, ensuring alignment with national patient safety goals.

Qualifications
Clinical Nurse Specialist

Master’s degree in Nursing or related discipline from an accredited institution.

Three (3) years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.

Valid licenses: Registered Nurse (RN) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent.

Strong communication, research, education, and advanced clinical skills in pediatric critical care.

Quality and Practice Advisor

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing; enrollment in a CNS program required, to be completed within 4 years of hire.

Three (3) years of progressively responsible, directly related experience.

Valid RN license and BLS certification; advanced life‑support certification (NRP/PALS/ACLS) and specialty certification required.

Proficiency in communication, research, patient assessment, education, and evidence‑based practice leadership.

Physical Requirements
General physical demands of the position include the ability to lift and move patients, use basic hand and eye coordination, and other responsibilities typical of nursing practice. Reasonable accommodations are available for qualified candidates with disabilities.

Pay Range
Clinical Nurse Specialist: $87.14 – $108.92 per hour (minimum to midpoint).
Quality and Practice Advisor: $79.03 – $98.79 per hour (minimum to midpoint).
