Park Interpretive Supervisor
Job Summary
The Park Interpretive Supervisor supervises and/or performs professional park, museum, and interpretive program operations work involving public contact, interpretive programs, exhibits and collections development and maintenance, and volunteer coordination.
Knowledge and Abilities
Principles and techniques of management and supervision
Nature areas and centers; park systems and recreation areas
Flora, fauna, and cultural and natural history of the Sacramento area
Techniques of live animal care and housing/display
Principles of natural resource conservation and interpretation
Methods and materials used in preparing and interpreting historical and natural science collections, displays and exhibits
Methods and materials used in preparing, conserving and cataloging specimens and artifacts
Sources of alternative funding
Principles of private sector involvement
General grant application processes
Budget preparation and control
Plan and direct the work of others
Deal successfully with the public
Work effectively and establish good working relationships with groups and organizations in the private sector
Speak and write clearly and effectively
Work with and motivate volunteers
Develop and implement long‑range operational plans
Coordinate publicity
Effectively identify and obtain alternative sources of funding
Minimum Qualifications
One year of full‑time experience in the class of Park Interpretive Specialist, Park Ranger I (Limited Peace Officer) or higher class in the Park Ranger series in Sacramento County service.
Or two years of full‑time experience in the class of Park Ranger Assistant in Sacramento County service.
Or graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in recreation and park administration, park administration with an interpretive option, public recreation, natural sciences, anthropology, art, museology or a related field.
Two years of full‑time paid or volunteer experience in park interpretation or management of a nature study area performing duties such as: conducting tours of natural habitats; interpreting park or nature museum exhibits; designing and installing nature museum exhibits; coordinating interpretive programs in a nature study area; organizing volunteer programs.
Special Requirements
Positions in these classes require working weekends and holidays, as well as fluctuating work hours and working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
A valid California driver's license, class C or higher, will be required by the date of appointment.
Possession of a valid CPR and First Aid certificate within six months of appointment; certificates must remain current while employed.
Willingness to conform to departmental policies and uniform requirements.
Physical Requirements
Perform physical labor such as lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling heavy objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
Walk on unpaved trails with uneven surfaces and sometimes unsteady footing daily.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.
