Job Description
The Wright City R-II School District has an opening for an RN or LPN to serve our students in the Middle School. This position is for 175 days per school year, full-time with benefits to begin immediately.

Summary: The school nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment. The school nurse plans, organizes, coordinates, and implements the district health program.

Job Responsibilities

Coordinates the school health program for children served by special education.

Obtains a health and developmental history, identifies health findings not within normal range, and initiates referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow through.

Recommends and helps implement modifications of school programs to meet students’ health needs.

Serves as a resource person to the classroom teacher and administrator in health instruction and as a member of the health curriculum development committees.

Consults with nursing staff/principal regarding establishment, maintenance, evaluation and revision of guidelines and procedures related to providing comprehensive school health services.

Facilitates student health care services with health services staff.

Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases.

Review students’ health records and inform school personnel of special health problems, possible school safety hazards. This includes providing training, handouts to faculty in such areas as epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, etc.

Facilitates the implementation of the health services data portion of the district’s student information management plan.

Reviews student accident reports; confers with appropriate school personnel in cases needing follow up.

Maintains statistical data related to mandated pupil health appraisals; compiles state-required reports.

Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of pupils.

Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication.

Compiles annual report for the department and monitors the monthly report from the nurses.

Supervises an orientation program for new nurses.

Prepares annual budget for health program and recommends purchases of materials; reviews and authorizes health supply requisition.

Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students.

Develops procedures and provides for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances; helps develop/revise school health policies, procedures and standing orders.

Prepares emergency bag for each building.

Provides program support to building principal for purpose of supervision and evaluation of nurses and health service aides.

Assists in the recruitment and interview of nurses and/or health service aides.

Monitors and reviews position description of health services personnel in relation to perceived health service needs standards of practice, Missouri Nurse Practice Act and district policy.

Consults with individual school nurses regarding the supervision of a delegation to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel in order to comply with MO Nurse Practice Act, district policies, and recommendations as set by professional nursing organizations.

Provides direction to staff through planned meetings, bulletins, individual conferences and school-based visits.

Participates as the health specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health individualized educational plan (IEP).

Monitors implementation of health service agreements between district consulting physicians and other community health care agencies.

Complies with state law and district policies and regulations.

Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
Education and/or Experience:

Experience as a school nurse preferred. Experience in supervision, management, evaluation, and training of personnel required.

Excellent communication, organization and computer skills.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration:

Current Missouri License as LPN or RN required.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and understand. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to finger, handle, feel and reach as well as to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, twist, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Regular attendance on the job is expected.

Terms of Employment
Terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, agreements and approvals. This is a nine month position.
