Motor Vehicle Records screening, pre‑employment drug screen, criminal background check, fingerprint test, physical examination, psychological evaluation.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school graduation or equivalent.
Must be at least 18 years old on date of application.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Willing and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
Good moral character as determined by investigation.
Complete a criminal history disclosure form and release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority.
Supply a fingerprint sample for a criminal history records check.
Have no felony convictions or be discharged under conditions other than honorable from any branch of the U.S. armed forces.
Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that meets ADA requirements.
Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional that meets ADA requirements.
Submit to and pass a pre‑employment screening test for illegal drug use.
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment for positions requiring driving.
Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy.
Overview
The Correctional Officer 1 is an entry‑level position in the Correctional Officer sub‑series. An incumbent performs correctional work at a state penal institution involving custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates and may work any shift. The role differs from that of Correctional Corporal, which involves minor supervisory duties.
After one year of mandatory training, an applicant is reclassified to Correctional Officer 2*. Inadequate performance during the training period may result in automatic demotion or termination.
Responsibilities
Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, and work areas; attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and security risks.
Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families on problems; evaluate inmates on hygiene, attitudes, and submit evaluations to counseling department.
Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
Prepare daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily counts, and office supply requisitions.
Operate equipment such as two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and motor vehicles as required.
Ensure resident safety through supervision of daily activities.
Break up conflicts or dangerous situations by persuasion or physical force.
Communicate and enforce existing policies and procedures to others.
Work Schedules
Correctional security employees may be assigned to any of three work shifts and various post assignments. While work preferences are considered, assignment to a specific shift or post is not guaranteed.
