
Environmental Safety & Health Specialist

Overview
Reporting to the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), the EHS Specialist is generally responsible for implementing, coordinating, and providing training for assigned environmental, safety, and health programs. The EHS Specialist evaluates physical environment conditions, processes, and equipment within Riverside Health System (RHS) facilities to determine risks of injury, occupational disease, and damage to property and equipment; in addition to developing measures for the control and reduction of such risks and limiting financial loss. This position utilizes effective communication techniques to prepare and conduct briefings or training programs, lead group conferences, and write reports and other correspondence.

What You Will Do
Use independent judgment when designing, implementing, and promoting EHS policies and programs. Identify opportunities using expertise to continuously improve operations by reviewing current policies/procedures and revising based on regulatory, accreditation, or best practice guidelines.
Provide technical expertise and administrative coordination for RHS operational programs involving OSHA/VOSH regulations, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and other general EHS compliance activities.
Function independently as primary coordinator for the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) software system (MSDSOnline) to maintain data integrity within the system and provide administrative support for division, facility, and department leaders.
Coordinate or deliver technical EHS training to identified RHS organizations and team members. Conduct training needs assessments and follow through to establish training requirements for divisions, facilities, departments, and job specialties.
Independently conduct periodic safety and environmental compliance audits as directed. Issue status reports from audits and perform follow‑up for corrective actions.
Build trusting collaborative relationships with leaders and team members regarding EHS issues. Provide technical advice and guidance on related matters. Respond effectively through timely follow‑up regarding requests and concerns.
Participate in assigned committee meetings and provide input/feedback regarding EHS concerns. Recommend and participate in supply utilization changes that support cost containment.
Demonstrate ability to prioritize and accomplish assignments with accuracy and timeliness (meeting work schedules, work assignments completed by deadlines, received minimal customer complaints). Respond with flexibility to changes and adapt to varying work assignments. Complete the problem‑solving cycle from problem identification to problem resolution to maximize opportunity or minimize problem.
Qualifications
Education
Associate’s Degree, Related Field (Required)
Bachelor’s Degree, Occupational Safety/Health/Industrial Hygiene/Environmental Science or Management (Preferred)
Experience
3-4 years of Safety or Environmental Practice experience (Required)
2 years of Healthcare operations experience (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
Occupational Hygiene & Safety Technician (OHST) (Preferred)
Associate Safety Professional (ASP) (Preferred)
Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) (Preferred)
Valid Driver’s License (Required)
