Summary of Responsibilities
The Onsite Safety Technician / Safety Specialist supports Durr Heavy Construction’s industrial and utility construction projects and is predominantly site‑based at client substation facilities in Lockport, Louisiana. The role monitors, enforces, and continuously improves jobsite safety performance through audits, site meetings, collaboration with jobsite leadership, and ensuring compliance with contractors, client, and regulatory safety requirements.
Responsibilities
Promotes safety leadership by serving as a visible and consistent driving force behind Durr Heavy Construction’s safety culture on all assigned jobsites.
Encourages safety ownership at all levels of field leadership and craft personnel.
Maintains safety documentation, ensuring reports, logs, and corrective action records remain accurate, current, and compliant with company, client, and regulatory standards.
Performs proactive auditing & hazard recognition through routine and unannounced jobsite safety audits, engaging jobsite leadership to establish immediate corrective action plans.
Leads and facilitates safety training, ensuring employees remain current with required safety training and certifications, delivering training directly or coordinating resources as needed.
Conducts incident investigation & reporting, performing root cause analysis and preparing detailed reports for submission to the Corporate Safety Director, and coordinating corrective actions with jobsite leadership.
Provides project safety leadership by coaching, guiding, and mentoring field employees and supervisors; assists jobsite leadership in maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant operations; actively participates in site meetings and safety planning discussions.
Builds and maintains strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, and Durr personnel, representing Durr Professionally during client safety meetings and audits.
Qualifications
Prior experience in a role where safety was a primary responsibility is strongly preferred.
Strong organizational skills, time management, professionalism, and ability to work collaboratively.
High emotional intelligence with a self‑less, team‑first mindset.
Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma required; some college preferred.
4 years of experience in landfill construction, waste disposal, or solid waste management.
2 years of supervisory or management experience required.
3–5 years of experience in construction safety or occupational safety & health preferred.
OSHA 30‑Hour Construction (required / preferred).
CSST / NCCER (preferred).
COSS (preferred).
OSHA 510 and/or OSHA 511 (preferred).
Physical Demands / Work Conditions
Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, and use hands for computer or equipment operation.
Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors, sometimes in loud environments and around heavy equipment.
Must always follow safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
