Responsibilities
The Demonstration Educator Apprentice and Demonstration Educator support the Early Learning Center’s (ELC) mission by providing direct training, mentoring, and supervision to undergraduate and graduate students and by leading day‑to‑day education programming in a laboratory school setting.
Demonstration Educator Apprentice Responsibilities
Provide direct training, mentoring, and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in their assigned early childhood education (ECE) classroom.
Meet weekly with pre‑service teachers, supporting their growth and learning.
Evaluate student performance in the classroom and correspond with course instructors regarding student needs and concerns.
Demonstrate teaching skills, strategies, and techniques, and model how to provide developmentally appropriate and safe environments.
Observe and assess children’s needs and behaviors, guide lesson development, and maintain documentation.
Create visual materials that illustrate demonstration practices and course content relevance.
Serve as a guest speaker in courses and engage in professional learning experiences to grow mentoring skills and ECE content knowledge.
Lead early childhood laboratory classrooms, ensuring compliance with Tennessee Department of Education licensing regulations, NAEYC standards, and high‑quality care practices.
Provide day‑to‑day classroom management, collaborative planning with other teachers, and supervision of all teaching staff.
Plan and implement meaningful lessons and ongoing assessments, upholding health, safety, and state licensing standards.
Implement culturally responsive curriculum and classroom practices.
Coordinate family‑support events, deliver parenting education content, and support outreach initiatives such as the Early Learning Institute and study tours.
Demonstration Educator Responsibilities
Design, implement, evaluate, and maintain high‑quality laboratory environments and experiences for undergraduate students.
Innovate curriculum and instructional methodology in laboratory contexts and evaluate experimental pedagogy.
Integrate research and emerging ECE pedagogy into classroom practice, supporting social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
Lead data reporting, representation, and dissemination efforts for program outcomes.
Translate programmatic systems, policies, and procedures into accessible and contextually appropriate modes for staff and students.
Provide training, accountability structures, and oversight on program operational systems for staff and students.
Required Qualifications
Demonstration Educator Apprentice : Bachelor’s degree in any field; at least two years of teaching young children (birth‑8) in a school or childcare setting; skills in prioritization, classroom and program management, instructional strategy, organization, communication, and self‑regulation.
Demonstration Educator : Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Special Education, or a related field; at least three years of teaching young children (birth‑8); all skills listed for the Apprentice plus expertise in inclusion planning, cultural responsivity, curriculum development, and advanced program evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstration Educator Apprentice : Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a closely related field; four years of teaching young children; demonstrated skills in inquiry‑based teaching, reflective practice, pedagogical documentation, mentoring, informed judgment, and decision‑making.
Demonstration Educator : Master’s degree; five years of teaching young children, experience working with diverse families, and a record of disseminating pedagogical work through writing or presentations; advanced public speaking, academic writing, supervisory feedback, and project‑management skills.
Work Location
Knoxville, Tennessee – In‑Person workplace.
Compensation and Benefits
Demonstration Educator Apprentice: $50,000; designation MR07.
Demonstration Educator: $54,000; designation MR08.
