Position Summary
Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays an important part in the lives of our individuals in our center-based adult day program. The DSP is responsible for providing instruction to the consumers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Services provided may be with one consumer or in a small group ratio under the supervision of the Program Coordinator.
Qualifications
Minimum High School Degree or equivalent
Minimum 1-year experience in working with individuals (preferably adults) with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to function effectively in a team environment.
Fluent in American Sign Language
Working knowledge of office equipment and basic Microsoft programs (computer, printers, copiers, etc.)
Good communication skills: in writing and sign language to perform essential duties and responsibilities.
Successful candidates will be required to complete a background check, fingerprinting, health screening, TB test, and certification of CPR/AED/First Aid.
Essential Duties
Responsible for the ongoing development, monitoring and maintenance of consumers’ Individual Service Plan (ISP) objectives as well as the review and communication of such plans on an ongoing basis with co-workers.
Demonstrate awareness and understanding of consumer rights and communicate with all individuals in a positive and respectful manner.
Utilize a Person-Centered Thinking approach to support all individuals in the program according to their needs and/or desires.
Assist consumers in the community by use of public transportation to engage in volunteer opportunities and community integration.
Complete documentation of consumers’ daily case notes, program attendance, and monthly progress reports in a timely manner.
Adhere to the Mandated Reporting requirements and emergency procedures: i.e., special incident reports, phone calls, email, and any necessary documents.
Participate in training opportunities (in-service training, staff meetings, etc.)
Perform other duties as assigned to meet department and/or company needs. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Follow directives provided by the Program Coordinator.
Use effective communication skills with diverse individuals and needs i.e., the use of adaptive technology, gestures, etc.
Conduct self in a professional manner when interacting with consumers, families, employees, and members of the community.
Demonstrate creativity and possess self-motivation.
Be able to work independently, prioritize tasks when necessary and satisfy deadline requirements of all tasks.
Familiarize self with agency and program policies and procedures.
Maintain strict confidentiality of files, documents and knowledge of operations, consumers, and employees WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to walk/travel short or long distances in the community
Use public transportation during program hours
Ability to push manual wheelchair or other devices, as needed
Maintain emotional control under stressful situations
May require attending to hygiene and self-help needs of individuals in emergency situations.
