Overview
The Phlebotomist is responsible for the proper procurement and handling of specimens for clinical testing. Duties include collection, transportation, ordering, labeling, processing, and other support activities as required.

Responsibilities
Perform accurate and timely collection and transport of clinical specimens using established procedures.
Identify patients following proper protocols prior to specimen collection.
Collect specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection, ensuring correct technique and patient comfort.
Label specimens accurately and legibly, including patient initials, date, and time.
Maintain a low specimen rejection rate by ensuring proper handling and storage.
Expedite STAT and high-priority specimens without delays.
Communicate with nursing staff and other personnel about patient concerns, testing delays, or questions.
Follow Carle Health safety and HIPAA policies during all specimen handling.
Verify specimen requirements and test catalog information prior to collection or processing.
Administer glucose solutions and perform glucose tolerance testing as required.
Perform EKG testing in outpatient facilities according to standards.
Collect specimens across a wide scope: blood, urine, stool, semen, swabs, specialty testing, pediatric draws, sputum, breath testing, etc.
Follow age‑specific patient care guidelines for elderly, adult, child, neonatal, and adolescent patients, ensuring patient dignity and comfort.
Operate centrifuge and other processing equipment following standard operating procedures.
Sort, label, and deliver specimens to the appropriate testing location, prioritizing STAT and other high‑priority orders.
Perform basic troubleshooting, maintenance, and ordering of maintenance work for label printers, centrifuges, and other equipment.
Maintain proper specimen storage according to protocol and retrieve specimens for additional testing when needed.
Enter specimen data accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and other relevant systems.
Monitor workload lists for uncollected or pending specimens and follow up accordingly.
Order additional tests and cancel tests following proper protocols.
Support training and onboarding of new personnel and students.
Manage consumable inventory, restock supplies, and coordinate reordering when volumes are low.
Keep work areas clean and dispose of contaminated items using designated red and gray bags.
Assist with other duties as requested or scheduled, including cross‑unit communication and patient orientation.
Compensation and Benefits
Hourly wage: $18.65 – $30.21 per hour, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.
