Part‑Time Patient Care Assistant (PCA)

Ellison 8, 36‑bed adult Cardiac Surgical Stepdown Unit, Boston, MA
Job Summary
Working under the direction of licensed personnel, the PCA assists patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and eating. The PCA also assists with taking patients’ temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration, aids in vital sign documentation, and performs point‑of‑care documentation in EHR.
Schedule
Days: (7 am–3 pm, 7 am–7 pm) and Nights: (11 pm–7 am, 7 pm–7 am). 1× 8‑hr shift and 1× 12‑hr shift per week; or 3× 8‑hr shift per week. Must have Day and Night shifts available on weekdays. Rotating weekend shifts are mandatory. Holiday scheduled.
Compensation
Hourly rate: $18.58–$26.58/hour (Grade 3). 750 USD sign‑on bonus and referral bonus available.

Essential Functions
Performs patient care‑related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including and excluding vital signs, EKGs, bathing, transfers, ambulation assistance, 1:1 observation, and phlebotomy.
Completes all documentation such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Assists patients with food tray setup, eating, and feeding, as needed.
Ensures that patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately.
Retrieves equipment from other areas, sets up equipment, cleans equipment between patient use, and reports malfunctioning equipment per policy.
Assists with admitting and discharging patients.
Facilitates orientation of new PCA team members as directed.
Interacts with patients, visitors, and other care team members effectively.
Communicates with nursing staff effectively and in a timely manner regarding patient care and condition issues.
Fosters a positive, collaborative team environment that promotes teamwork and professional growth.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred. No experience in lieu of a degree.
Experience: 0–1 year in patient care/elder care preferred. Preference for acute care experience in a patient‑facing environment.
Licenses and Credentials: Basic Life Support (BLS) – Generic – HR Only preferred; Certified Medical Assistant (National Certification) – Generic – HR Only preferred; Nursing Assistant/Patient Care Technician (National Certification) – Generic – HR Only preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; Knowledge of medical terminology; Strong patient/customer service skills; Ability to lift up to 35 pounds; Proficient in computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.
