This position provides patient care at the direction of a Registered Nurse. The incumbent will have direct contact with patients and families, perform indirect patient care activities, and may administer medications within scope of practice and in accordance with state law.
Responsibilities

Assist patients with feeding, drinking, ambulating, grooming, toileting, dressing, socializing, and unit‑specific technical skills.
Reinforce or assist in educating patients and significant others as directed.
Collect, report, and document data related to direct patient care activities.
Assist with indirect patient care activities such as maintaining a clean, efficient, and safe environment, providing companion care, housekeeping, transporting patients, and chaperoning physicians during examinations and procedures.
Perform unit‑specific and additional clerical duties, including stocking and maintaining supplies.
Communicate with hospital staff, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
Process paper orders during downtime, entering the downtime occurrence order and associated times in each patient record.
Process electronic requests to order medical treatments and tests; retrieve lab results as needed.
Schedule patient appointments.
Maintain patient records and activity boards.
Manage admits, discharges, and transfer functions per unit standard.
Observe the cardiac monitor and notify nursing and medical staff of abnormal heart rhythm variances indicating heart ischemia or myocardial infarction.
Work rotating schedules, including variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays, as required for a 24/7 health system.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Customer service skills and ability to work in a busy environment.
Proficient use of a multi‑line phone system and hospital paging system.
Ability to initiate appropriate action in emergency or crisis situations.
Qualifications

For those enrolled in an RN program, the candidate must obtain an RN license within three months of completing the program. If not obtained within this period, the candidate must immediately obtain a current CNA certification.
Individuals with an RN license who remain in this position longer than three months must also hold a CNA certification.
Licenses Required

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within 30 days of hire.
One of the following:

Current certification as a Nursing Assistant with the State of Utah.
Completion of the first round of clinical and current enrollment in an approved nursing education program.

Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The position requires lifting or moving up to 100 pounds, and may involve handling patients or medical equipment while providing patient care.
Workers may be exposed to infectious diseases and may need to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
