KIPP New Jersey is part of the nationally recognized "Knowledge Is Power Program" network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students for success in college and in life. In 2002, KIPP New Jersey first opened its doors in Newark’s South Ward as a single class of 80 fifth graders and has since grown to educate students in grades K-12 across 18 schools in Newark, Camden, and Paterson. More than 90% of KIPP New Jersey students currently qualify for free or reduced meals.
Job Description
We anticipate beginning interviews in late April and the full process concluding by May 2026, with July 2026 start dates. Applications received after February will be considered on a rolling, and as-needed basis. Assistant Principals are the primary driver of instructional outcomes for a specific grade level or content area, spending over 75% of their time on leadership that accelerates student achievement.
Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
Strong Content Knowledge: Establish and maintain instructional standards and coach teachers on effective teaching strategies.
Professional Development: Design and lead high-quality PD focused on improving teacher effectiveness.
Data Analysis: Observe, walk through, and analyze student data and coaching dashboards to inform strategic decisions and priorities.
Testing Environment: Ensure effective testing procedures and investment in testing.
Student Culture
Reinforce high expectations for all students and cultivate joy in learning.
Build strong, lasting relationships with students, especially the most challenging ones.
Create an inclusive environment where all student voices are heard and addressed.
Hold staff accountable to values and professional standards.
Staff Culture
Celebrate and appreciate team members regularly.
Develop systems for staff culture, including coaching, department meetings, and other collaborative practices.
Model and reinforce high expectations for all staff.
Community Engagement
Proactively engage families and community stakeholders as partners in school goals.
Address family concerns and support teachers in building parent relationships.
Talent Management
Conduct performance management for direct reports with observations, micro‑goals, and written evaluations.
Identify and retain top performers while supporting struggling teachers through goal setting and added support.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Student Focus: Belief that all students, regardless of background, can succeed in college and a demonstrated commitment to the school’s community.
Achievement Orientation: Demonstrated student achievement results in own classroom and from teachers you manage.
Cultural Competence: Ability to create inclusive environments that honor diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Instructional Leadership: Adept at data analysis and strong content knowledge.
High Expectations: Set and uphold high academic and behavioral standards for students.
Results through Others: Evidence of teaching classroom management and effective lesson execution to others.
Relationship Building: Proven ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
Critical Thinking: Strong problem‑solving skills.
Experience coaching and managing others and/or leading a team to results.
Salary & Benefits
KIPP Team & Family offers a market‑competitive salary ranging from $90,000 to $135,000 based on experience.
