
EKG Technician 1

The employee will be able to provide continuous observation of monitored ECG rhythms for patients on telemetry and report pertinent information to appropriate nursing personnel. The employee will also function independently performing ECG's, halter monitor set up, Bio Z, dictation, EKG editing, completing tasks in Cerner and posting of ECG's.
Responsibilities
TECHNICAL TASKS
Keep unit stocked of supplies including forms, patient supplies, equipment, and maintain all unit reference materials; keep the work area clean and orderly.
Appropriately monitor ECG throughout the patient's placement on telemetry by:
Setting up telemetry channel for patient monitoring.
Calibrating telemetry monitor module.
Maintaining rate alarms as designated by nurse.
Maintaining patient I.D. tags on telemetry floor.
Obtain report from charge nurse regarding patient's rhythm status at the beginning of the shift, as needed when patients monitor needs change, and when a new telemetry patient is admitted.
Document by obtaining a rhythm strip, labeling with patient ID, time and lead monitored, and placing in patient's chart every four hours or when a monitored rhythm or rate change occurs.
Accurately receive, place, and transfer phone calls, and record and communicate messages; efficiently use phones, intercoms and computer.
Complete competencies of Telemetry/ECG tech as required.
Perform ECG, ECG disc retrieval, editing and charting, Bio-Z (hemodynamic measure), and Holter monitor set up in a timely manner.
Explain procedures to patients and document this in the patient record; provide for patient privacy at all times.
Edit electrocardiograms through the EKG computer, paying attention to detail and seeking help if needed; post edited EKGs on patient chart in a timely manner.
Clean and maintain equipment on every shift according to prescribed guidelines.
Accurately check Cardiology tasks in Cerner, follow up and correct any errors related to ordering and performance of cardiology tasks prior to end of shift.
CRITICAL THINKING
Troubleshoot monitoring and cardiology equipment and notify appropriate department for assistance as needed.
Notify nurse appropriately for observed changes in patients monitored heart rate, rhythm, or patterns. Identify and report premature ventricular contractions (PVC), ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (V Fib), artifact, electrical muscle movement and loose leads, and changes in monitored patients' heart rate or rhythm.
Assess work area and responsibilities and provide constructive suggestions to benefit the unit.
Seek assistance from appropriate personnel promptly when needed.
Assist other department employees as needed; assume additional responsibilities while other employees are on vacation or not scheduled to work.
Demonstrate a willingness to help with tasks that need to be done; stay late to complete assigned tasks when necessary.
Other duties as assigned.
Consistently perform 12 organizational Service Standards focused on values, service, and quality.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent.
BLS Certification.
