Job Summary

As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, medical social workers provide psychosocial interventions to patients and families. Work addresses a variety of biopsychosocial issues, includes assessment of social needs related to health status and collaborative development of a treatment plan, advocacy within the organization and community, counseling, referrals and practical assistance. Provides consultation, orientation, and training to health care staff on the effects of biopsychosocial, cultural, and economic issues. Advocates for social work core values and ethics within Stanford Medicine and the larger community.
Types of Positions

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW):

Second and fully-qualified level, for employees licensed by the State of California as LCSWs. Positions characterized by substantial professional responsibility and independence.
Social Work Clinician:

Entry-level, for recent graduates or those with professional social work experience but not yet licensed as LCSW.
Essential Functions

Provide individual/group clinical supervision to MSWs and student interns as assigned.
Prepare and maintain electronic medical records in accordance with policies.
Provide written and oral reports and hand-offs.
Conduct psychosocial assessment of patients/families upon admission, annually or as clinically indicated.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams to develop and implement psychosocial treatment plans, coordinate referrals, and document progress.
Assist patients/families in coping with environmental and psychological issues of illness.
Manage assigned caseload including case finding.
Participate in team conferences and interdisciplinary rounds.
Provide supportive counseling, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and psychoeducation regarding diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
Assist transition of patients/families from youth to adult services.
Participate in quality assurance and community improvement related to social work services, and contribute to development of policies and guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE‑accredited program or equivalent.
Experience: Two years of progressively responsible, directly related work experience.
License/Certification: Valid LCSW license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
Eligibility: For roles requiring a Social Work Clinician, a master’s degree and a certificate verifying registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker if program not CSWE‑accredited.
Knowledge and Skills

Apply theories, principles and practices of medical social work in a hospital setting.
Conduct data‑based assessments and manage caseloads while maintaining confidentiality.
Provide written case narratives and reports.
Employ effective assessment, interviewing, and counseling techniques.
Utilize hospital and medical center resources to access and provide patient care needs.
Understand child development, family dynamics, and cultural considerations of the patient population.

Additional Information

Positions may be flexibly staffed from Social Work Clinician to Licensed Clinical Social Worker depending on qualifications. Social workers may be assigned to California Children’s Services (CCS) clinics with specific paneling criteria.
Pay Range

Compensation is based on level and requirements. Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.
SWC (Social Work Clinician):

Minimum to Midpoint (Hourly): $52.32 to $58.67
LCSW:

Minimum to Midpoint (Hourly): $54.94 to $61.60
